Assad is a beast .So was Saddam . But Iraq under saddam was light years ahead of where it is now . Same story is being repeated in syria . I wish GCC countries with their rose tinted glass could wake up to this reality . Even if Assad win's Syria won't be the same again. I'm pretty sure the reasons why Russia is helping him directly right now is that so that they can implement the Russian model of conflict resolution.

I'm playing devils advocate here but if Assad were to win he will probably remain as some sort of leader in a federalized Syria where he is backed by a sunni-arab 'kadyrov' to be a buffer against jihadists and kurdish autonomy in the north east.

Turks probably would not like another Kurdish autonomous region to deal with in Syria but you can't help but think it will come to fruition considering the Kurds are Nato's best allies against isil at the moment. Once isil are defeated I am pretty sure they will get their reward from the west.

Of course there is nothing stopping western countries turning on the kurds later on but it seems unlikely given their strategic position against Iran, the Arabs and potential turkish expansionism. Why does US need treacherous ally like Turkey who supports, funds and benefits from ISIS, while Kurds are the only reliable ground force seriously fighting ISIS? This puzzles me.

Turks are historical enemies of Russians. The US uses Turks against Russia. That's why Turkey is a NATO country.
