Dhaka, July 23 (bdnews24.com) Minister for Information and Communications Technology Syed Abul Hossain finally resigned from his office on Monday.
The Minister, linked to the corruption allegation in the Padma bridge project raised by the World Bank, submitted his resignation letter, a highly placed source confirmed bdnews24.com.
The resignation is expected to end the 10-month-long crisis the government has been facing over the alleged corruption that led the World Bank to suspend its promised fund for Bangladesh's biggest infrastructure project.
Abul Hossain was absent in the Cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat on Monday. The Minister left his residence in a car without waving flag in the morning, on-duty police constable 'Hasan' said.
The source with the knowledge of the matter said Abul Hossain took the decision to step down from the office as an investigation was going into the allegation of Padma bridge corruption.
The Minister, however, never admitted that he was involved in any corruption while he was the Communications Minister.
In Dec last year, Abul Hossain was transferred from the ministry of Communications to the incumbent ministry from where he resigned.
Eventually, the WB cancelled its $ 1.2 billion fund for the $2.9 billion project on Jun 29. The WB justifying its decision said the government did not follow its suggestion to send the officials linked to the alleged corruption and holding powerful position into leave until the investigation was complete.
The government castigated the WB for its decision while Abul advertised in the media claiming his innocence.
The Finance Minister AMA Muhith had said on Sunday, "We had difficulties to accept the fourth points made by World Bank's Resident Representative Goldstein (Ellen). We are trying to solve the problem."
The fourth condition was to send bureaucrats and politically appointed people into leave.
Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told journalists in the afternoon that he did not receive any resignation letter until then. Abul neither informed the Cabinet about his absence beforehand, he said.
bdnews24.com could not reach Abul Hossain over cell phone. Abul Hossain's wife did not comment when contacted.
Abul was made Communications Minister on January 6, 2009, when Sheikh Hasina formed her cabinet after assuming power. He was a State Minister in the Cabinet Awami League had formed during its previous tenure (1996-2001).
