A new Swedish-British fighter aircraft. It can be the result of the discussions that have begun and where the Gripen manufacturer Saab is an important player.
The British are hard pressed and have to save their aviation industry. It is more than a year left before Saab will deliver the first new Gripen E. But work is already underway with Gripen's successor and it may take the form of a new collaboration with the British defense industry.

According to the Financial Times business magazine, Britain and Sweden have had initial discussions about cooperation on next-generation fighter aircraft. It's about a new plan that will replace the current Eurofighter Typhoon for the British part. In that case, the plane may also be a substitute for the new Gripen E that Saab is preparing for the air force in Sweden and Brazil.

For Britain, it has become almost urgent to find a solution for the country's aviation industry. On the civil side, one is worried about how Airbus's production of large aircraft wings in Britain will work after brexit. However, the massive troublemaker lies above the military part, where the production of the fighter plane Eurofighter Typhoon goes towards the end. Although UK companies play an important role in the new F-35, it is essentially a US fighter aircraft, and if the British aviation industry is to remain, a new major project is needed.

The British government is therefore working with a new strategy for the future fighters. The goal is to have a first development contract ready until 2020 and at the same time start collaborating with other countries, at least in key areas.

Besides Sweden, Japan and South Korea are also listed. Jonas Hjelm, head of Saab's airline operations, confirms that discussions with the British are ongoing. But he also points out that Saab is talking to several and it is not clear how a collaboration will look like or when a decision is made. Actually, Saab should be able to take it quite smoothly. In comparison with the other European companies, Saab is the only one who has a new fighter aircraft in progress, which for several years will require continued development and employing engineers.

Actually, Saab should be able to take it quite smoothly. The major countries in European aviation, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, on the other hand, only have older planes. They are therefore pressured to quickly get new projects if they want to stay alive in their own industry. It is clearly apparent that cooperation France and Germany began a year ago, and since then they have been operating at a surprisingly high rate. At the same time, French-German cooperation in combination with brexit has put additional pressure on Britain. And when the giants Germany, France and the United Kingdom simultaneously move, the pressure on Sweden also increases to decide on the next step. An option for Saab is to continue on its own with new collaborations with Brazil and US Boeing. If Sweden, on the other hand, wants to go European road, it is important to arrive early so that Saab and the Swedish military can influence the focus on what is in practice both giant defense and industrial initiatives.

What about engine?

That is anyones guess, but my bet would be on a new engine based on Rolls-Royce technology.
Sweden has a lot of experience in engines including FADEC competence at GKN (Formerly Volvo Flygmotor), so some of the Eurojet partners could be replaced by GKN in an EJ2xx engine.

Been waiting for some movement from Sweden over a Gripen successor. I hope there's some movement soon.

What happenesd to Flygsystem 2020?
