The MIM-72 Chaparral was a mobile SAM system based off of the AIM-9D which is a short range air-to-air missile commonly used among NATO members and their allies. The missile itself is very similar to the AIM-9D with minor differences in find and rollerons. What I'm trying to say is that the MICA and the Chaparral missiles are similar sizes so why can MICA missiles not be put in a similar fashion on a small tracked vehicle like this picture demonstrates.

In my opinion it would be easier to operate than the VL MICA while still giving similar performance to that of the VL MICA and much, much better performance than the MIM-72 Chaparral in terms of range, maximum altitude, and options for use against a number of threats.
MIM-72 Chaparral specifications
  • Length: 2.90 metres (9 ft 6 in)
  • Wingspan: 63.0 centimetres (24.8 in)
  • Diameter: 127 millimetres (5.0 in)
  • Launch weight: 86 kilograms (190 lb)
  • Speed: Mach 1.5
  • Range: 500 to 9,000 metres (1,600 to 29,500 ft; 0.31 to 5.59 mi)
  • Altitude: 25 to 4,000 metres (82 to 13,123 ft)
  • Guidance: Passive infra-red tail chasing
VL-MICA specifications
  • Length: 3.1 meters (10 ft 2 in)
  • Wingspan: 48.0 centimeters
  • Diameter: 160 mm millimeters
  • Launch weight: 112 kilograms
  • Speed: Mach 3.0
  • Range: 1000 to 20000 meters
  • Altitude: 9200 meters maximum and 10 meters minimum
  • Guidance: Radar or infrared seeking
As you can see the VL-MICA dusts on MIM-72 Chaparral in terms of performance but is similar in terms of size to the missile.

This looks like it takes a long time to acquire and launch the missile but what I propose is simple. Use a tracked or wheeled vehicle, use only infrared seeking missiles or maybe use a Pantsir type radar on the system for the radar guided version of the missile but also add a boost motor to the missile, and lastly use a flir camera like the one used in the Avenger SAM to quickly target and destroy flying vehicles. Tell me does this firing sequence look faster than the VL-MICA?

To me it does and in my opinion it would be a much more lethal system for air defense forces. Give me your opinion on if you think this system would be effective as a short range SAM that can reach the altitudes of jets flying at high altitudes.

For reference this is the kind of layout for the gunner I would like to see on it. Pay attention to the man in the back of the Humvee.
