Apple suppliers are reportedly building production lines in Vietnam to test the feasibility of producing the HomePod outside of China, according to a report from Nikkei Asia that looks at how the south-east Asian country is becoming a top focus for Apple has it looks to diversify its supply chain and move production away from China.
According to the report, the HomePod is one of three devices currently seeing production being tested in Vietnam, joining the Apple Watch and some MacBook models in having trial manufacturing runs as Luxshare Precision and Foxconn look to move some product assembly away from China, as per Apple’s instructions.
“AirPods, Apple Watch, HomePod and more . . . Apple has big plans in Vietnam, apart from iPhone manufacturing,” one of the people with direct knowledge of the situation said. “The components for MacBooks have become more modularised than in the past, which makes it easier to produce the laptops outside of China. But how to make it cost-competitive is another challenge.”
Apple has been producing AirPods in Vietnam since 2020, with the iPhone maker pushing suppliers over recent years to explore moving factories outside of China, with tensions between the U.S. a key driving force behind the move.
