Sukkur-multan section: Ground-breaking on May 6

ISLAMABAD: The prime minister is expected to perform the groundbreaking of the Sukkur-Multan section of long-awaited Karachi-Lahore Motorway on May 6, as the government’s drive to muster support among the masses gains pace amid the Panama leaks scandal.

A National Highway Authority (NHA) official requesting anonymity toldThe Express Tribune the date of the ceremony in Sukkur has been finalised after approval from the PM Secretariat.

The arrangements for the groundbreaking are under way and are likely to be completed by Thursday evening. Invitations to the officials of relevant ministries and departments will be dispatched shortly by the PM House and the NHA as well.

In December last year, a Chinese railway company said it had secured a $1.46 billion contract jointly with a Pakistani company to build the Karachi-Lahore motorway.

China Railway Construction Corporation said its unit, China Railway 20th Bureau Group Co, and Zahir Khan and Brothers Engineers and Constructors have won the bid to build a 1,152km section of the motorway project between the port city and Lahore, according toThe Economic Times.
