‘Suicide squad militants’ caught

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three ‘suicide squad militants’ with ‘heavy weapons’ in their possession from a clandestine meeting in Bogra.
The elite crime-busting agency said they detained them from a house near Jobani Primary School in the district town’s Thanthaniya at around 4:30pm on Thursday.
RAB-12 ASP Abu Sayeed told reporters that they recovered a light machine gun (LMG), a sub-machine gun (SMG), a pistol, four magazines with 80 rounds of bullet, a telescope, several locally made arms, a catalogue of arms, a diary and ‘******’ books.
He said the arrestees were all members of a ‘suicide squad’. “In their diaries they wrote they wished to be martyred.”
ASP Sayeed said they were being questioned.
About the seized arms, RAB-12 Company Commander Md Miran Hossain told reporters, “These kinds of arms are usually used by the armed forces. Though they have the same name, the arms and bullets we seized are of different brands and made in different countries.”
Miran, also an Air Force Squadron Leader, said 21 militants were attending the clandestine meeting but 18 of them fled.
An eight-member unarmed RAB team in disguise took part in the raid. They entered the house and attended the meeting. At one point, some of the militants attacked them being suspicious.
“Four RAB officers received minor injuries during the scuffle.”
Another group of armed RAB team had taken position on the lane beside the house. As they approached the house, most of the militants fled after breaking through the iron grill of a window, Miran said.
Most of the attendees of the secret meeting were aged between 18 and 22 years, he said, adding only one of them who was briefing was probably 35 years of age.
RAB, however, did not disclose the identity of the arrestees. Officials said they would conduct more raids to arrest the rest of the militants.
Meanwhile, the owner of that house, ‘Dulal’, could not be found. One of his neighbours told bdnews24.com that the new tenants had come to that house four days ago.
Another neighbour said they were seeing some new people in the area for the last few days. They were far from friendly and the RAB raid vindicated his feeling, he said.
A visit to the spot revealed the only way to enter that house beside the Jobani Primary School was a lane where a vehicle bigger than a motorcycle or bicycle would not enter.
The rear of the house is wide open which provided the militants with enough opportunity to run off.
