KABUL — A suspected suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle detonated Sunday while driving towards Afghanistan's biggest US-run military base, authorities said.

The explosion appeared to have happened prematurely on a road about five minutes' drive from Bagram Air Field, 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of the capital Kabul, the interior ministry said.

"Again the enemies of Afghanistan failed to achieve their goal. A suicide bomber with his bomb-filled car detonated before reaching his target," the statement said.

The Taliban claimed credit for the bombing but said it targeted a convoy of "American spies". Taliban are known to make false claims and exaggerate death tolls.

On Saturday suicide attacks in the southern provinces of Kandahar and Helmand killed six people and injured dozens.

On the same day, a suicide bomber was captured in the northern province of Badakhshan before he set off his vest, the interior ministry said.

yes, you got it right, they go after very young kids and brainwash them. i wonder why these fockers dont ask their own family members to do such an inhumen act? your heart will be bleeding to hear the story of many parents whom young boys have been taken to suicide factories(madrasahs) without their knowledge.

I certainly don't have the answer. I can tell you what I would have done if I were supreme General... I would have responded to 9-11 with overwhelming force and violence. Obliterated training camps, killed as many al Quaeda and terrorists as possible, then I would have ordered all my forces home. Six months to a year max. It'd be 100% punitive. I would then leave behind posters and billboards that say "If you export violence again, we will be back and we'll do this all over... again."

I don't believe in exporting social systems. Maybe it's callous and cruel, but if the Taliban and al Quaeda want to install their style of governance, it's nobody's business beyond the Afghani citizens themselves.

What you are suggesting is very expensive and has little to no return. War is hardwork. If the soldiers are getting paid, the people paying for it want to get paid as well. Exporting governance is the wrong term. Installing governments is big business.

Maybe you should learn from us on how we obiltirated terrorism from Saudi Arabia. It's a story that never goes int he news and its story that many choose not to hear. But we ourselves were plagued by them. It reached the point where you hear of suicide bombing ever other day here. Many civilians and children were killed. Which is why when I hear what articles read about how "Saudi money supporting terrorism" and how "Saudi Arabia exporting evil bad Wahabism" I can't help but think of all the people that died here and how would they feel if they were to see such accusations.

You can not kill them all. Killing them individually will not mean their numbers are depleting. You kill one two of his family will want revenge and will enlist themselves to fight the ones who killed their loved ones who only wanted to defend his homeland from the invaders.

What you do is kill their ideology. Make terrorism not appealing to them, give them a better life instead of giving them a life in which they will ask for death.
