Around the globe each year 15 million babies are born too soon

A dose of sugar given as a gel rubbed into the inside of the cheek is a cheap and effective way to protect premature babies against brain damage, say experts.

Dangerously low blood sugar affects about one in 10 babies born too early. Untreated, it can cause permanent harm.

Researchers from New Zealand tested the gel therapy in 242 babies under their care and, based on the results, say it should now be a first-line treatment.

Their work is published in The Lancet.

Sugar dose
Dextrose gel treatment costs just over £1 per baby and is simpler to administer than glucose via a drip, say Prof Jane Harding and her team at the University of Auckland.

Current treatment typically involves extra feeding and repeated blood tests to measure blood sugar levels.

But many babies are admitted to intensive care and given intravenous glucose because their blood sugar remains low - a condition doctors call hypoglycaemia.

The study assessed whether treatment with dextrose gel was more effective than feeding alone at reversing hypoglycaemia.

Neil Marlow, from the Institute for Women's Health at University College London, said that although dextrose gel had fallen into disuse, these findings suggested it should be resurrected as a treatment.

We now had high-quality evidence that it was of value, he said.

Andy Cole, chief executive of premature baby charity Bliss, said: "This is a very interesting piece of new research and we always welcome anything that has the potential to improve outcomes for babies born premature or sick.

"This is a cost-effective treatment and could reduce admissions to intensive care services, which are already working at high capacity levels.

"While the early results of this research show benefits to babies born with low blood sugars, it is clear there is more research to be done to implement this treatment."

'Sugar gel' helps premature babies - BBC News

Over 1400 years ago, when a child was born, the Prophet (PBUH) made it his sunnah to take a small part of a date and place it in his mouth. He would then chew it until it was soft and then rub it onto the palate of the new born baby. This is called Tahneek.

Today, BBC News has reported that "experts" have said - "A dose of sugar given as a gel rubbed into the inside of the cheek is a cheap and effective way to protect premature babies against brain damage"

This is why Muslims follow the sunnah of the messenger without questioning it.

.
Then why drive cars or travel by airplanes? :D

Preventing hypoglycemia is well known, this technique has been shown to be effective at a lower price, that is all.

How is that related? You know when people with ill intentions utter absolute rubbish it doesnt matter how many degrees you have, seriously, you are just no different from a Jahil....

By showing something (it could even be a home remedy/ verbal tradition) but that you would accept coz it isnt linked with a prophet ....But just coz this can be claimed that Prophet did it lets all ride camels :tsk: :tsk: :tsk:

Preventing hypoglycemia is well known, this technique has been shown to be effective at a lower price, that is all.
And who exactly is speaking otherwise? Apparently for you economical remedies are a roll of the eye but for many it is useful!

. .
Responding to any and all advances in science with claims of how Islam knew it all 1400 years ago is pretty pathetic, that is all, truth be told.
Its not...Medicine is seeking old knowledge...Only people like you with some hidden hatred are not walking with time while asking others to ride camels :tsk:

.
Medicine is seeking "old" knowledge? The pursuit of knowledge is timeless and ever progressive. Better understanding of older practices validates as many as it invalidates, and further progression of this cycle. And so on. Religion has nothing to do with this inexorable march.

It is timeless but it has been followed without research
Better understanding of older practices validates as many as it invalidates, and further progression of this cycle
Apparently only when you say it do you understand it....Kehtay hain aqalmandoun kay liyea ishara hi kafi hota hai...Maybe I am trying on the wrong person ...

Religion has nothing to do with this inexorable march.
I never said about religion...But a fact that a man we follow did it and people followed it like he did all sorts of other things, drinking water when you get up (nihar moun)....how is that making you burn is over my head! If science is only NOW finding its goodness through THEIR OWN EXPERIMENTAL approaches how can your burning and blaming some civilization already knew it be understood is beyond me! Had they bothered looking at things like science ASKS them to instead of holding grudges like you and dismissing something SOLELY coz you hate it......we could have gone further down, dont you think? Of course there are some wrong too...but already knowing something was practiced and doing research on that is common sense....

The Chinese use acupuncture for centuries before it was verified that it was science.....now in some American institutes it is taught as a module- my cousin was thinking of taking it when he was doing his MD...

Now Buddhist monks practice it and just coz someone would say Buddhist monks practiced it and science only found it now would that puncture you too?

.
it's an excellent research and very applicable for countries such as ours.........

Of course it is excellent research that shows the effectiveness of the new technique. The rest of your rant I will ignore.

I didn't expect you to confuse normal new borns vs. preemies.

preemies (or premature babies) surviving to adulthood is relatively new phenomenon.

Here is a quick quotation:

Premature Birth

The invention of the incubator in France in the 1880s constituted a major advance in the field of what is now called neonatology. The first hospital specializing in the care of premature infants opened in Chicago in 1923. Since home birth was still the norm, parents were reluctant to have their child stay in a hospital to undergo experimental treatments. This changed dramatically during the 1960s when major advances in assisted breathing technology, improved nursery equipment, new surgical techniques, innovative INFANT FEEDING methods, and new therapeutic drugs made neonatology a viable subspecialty within PEDIATRICS. Since the 1960s medical advances have increased substantially the survival rates of premature and low-weight-for-gestational-age infants.

Before 1880s, preemies being given dates by prophet pbuh? That my dear is a qalabazi a trickery that is 1000s of years long.

Please avoid this if you can and limit the religiosity to more mundane things like fasting and praying.

Thank you

No worries bro

so many Muslims with connections to our part of the world loose part of their brain while comparing 2015 AD to 600 AD.

Tumhara demagh bohut ghaleez hai............ nay nay Amreeki, shaid tumm bhool gaye kay Pakistan eik ghareeb mulk hai...... it's an excellent research and very applicable for countries such as ours.........

There is nothing wrong with you actually, my parents told me long long time ago that when poor people get rich all of a sudden, they lose their soul....... you are one such poor person who recently got rich..... don't worry, there are such proverbs in almost every language... specially Turkish language is full of such sayings.
ghaleez nahi chalu hae:D
it actually will have little impact to no impact...
consider this,,,hypoglycemia is not the only thing in premature newborns,, for all the others,,,treatment require iv route,,,so with an already established iv route,,,why wud a doc risk to put some jelly in a prematures mouth n risk aspiration into wind pipe or necrotising colitis.

Consider the cost-effectiveness too.

So you mean to say if I give sugar to a normal baby he will die? Seriously? It just shows he used to do it for all babies....

And you pointing out premature and normal ones does not show anything!

You see thoughts like this stops Muslims from progressing...Oh Muslim/Islam never did a thing nor can you wait for the west to feed us discoveries which we already know had we bothered to read em or continue in the research

so many Muslims with connections to our part of the world loose part of their brain while comparing 2015 AD to 600 AD.
And you talking crap during roza is using which part of your brain?

I didnt COMPARE it...It was a statement that IT WAS DONE...Like many of you say when someone in Pakistan does something in science...Oh west had been doing it since before you were born....which may be a fact like this is...Why does it burn some of you when facts are NOT from the west ...esp a time period when they were still throwing their poop out the windows?

why take risk

to protect premature babies against brain damage, say experts.
Just like vaccines protect you but wont guarantee you....so why take vaccine shots?
