Sufi team faces protest at Hazratbal shrine

OCTOBER 13, 2019

A pan-India 16-member Sufi Muslims’ delegation, All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council (AISSC), has started visiting the shrines in the Valley “to integrate them [Kashmiris] with the country’s mainstream” but faced stiff opposition at the Hazratbal shrine here on Saturday.

The delegation, which arrived on October 12, made its first attempt to interact with locals at the popular shrine on Saturday noon, after participating in the congregational noon prayers there.

The locals said many worshippers took exception to their presence and made them leave the premises, while raising slogans.

“Some slogans may have happened,” said All India Sufi Sajadnisheen Council (AISSC) spokesman Deepak Sharma.

Syed Naseer ud Din Chisti, senior member of the AISSC, said the three-day visit of the delegation was aimed at “spreading the message of love and integrating Kashmiris with the country’s mainstream. We are showered with love here”.

The delegation is hosted by the State government and is provided with security cover. It has postponed its visit to another significant shrine — Makhdoom sahib.

Mr. Chisti refused to comment on the revocation of J&K’s special status or Article 370. “We have come to ascertain the ground situation here. People seem unhappy here due to non-availability of mobile phone services and Internet,” he said.
