A science project prepared by Turkish high school students has received a prestigious award in the U.S. after being rejected by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), Doğan News Agency has reported.

With the help of their chemistry teacher Gülay Demirci, two students at a private high school in the southern province of Antalya, Mehmet Can Dursun and İrfan Efe Boztepe, prepared a project that aimed to heal wounds 30 percent faster with nanofibers formed by the shells of crabs and shrimps.

They applied to TÜBİTAK with their project but were rejected, after which they applied to a U.S.-based competition between high schools around the world.

The project got first place in the competition, which included 2,450 projects from 54 countries, winning the gold medal.

Demirci said she was proud of her students’ success and was pleased when she saw the Turkish flag on the stage as winner.

“We made a nanofiber from the waste shells of crabs and shrimps which can be used to combat diabetes. This nanofiber can be used against diabetes and burns. It also has another feature, it can easily stop bleeding. Our aim is to provide use of this product in daily routines and we want it to be manufactured. But we have not met any producer yet,” she added.

Successful student Dursun, meanwhile, said he would like to be a genetic engineer or doctor in the future.
“I researched this project very much. Now we want to see this product on the market, and it would be helpful if it becomes popular in our country,” he added.

Take this garbage to the politics thread or post an article about these students' success that isn't drooling with political bias.

Think of it like this, at least someone appreciates innovation and creativity and are willing to praise these kids for their effort. And hopefully they'll go on and do great things, even if it isn't in Turkey.

Mustafa Sancar, the director of the Ankara Zoo, was appointed to a key post at TÜBİTAK in 2014.

Here is the answer to the question ''How''.

Gülay Demirci the teacher tells the story regarding TÜBİTAK in Turkish:

Üstelik burslu okumaya ABD’ye davet edildiler.”

Here is what she says: It is accepted that Turkey is divided into 12 sections, we attented from Konya section. We were eliminated at the very begining, disliked, even we could not understand the elimination criteria. They cannot even explain why we were eliminated, they only say we were not selected. the kids were sad, but became champion in worldwide, offered $10K scholarship in USA.

İpliğin iğneyle sanata dönüştüğü yer, Nallıhan....

Are you aware that Tubitak is a scientific instute ? Or are you also come from a zoo ?

I don't quite understand how the participant under the category "Biology" is related to biology.

But I second that Tubitak being a scientific institution should change how they evaluate things.

Instead of eliminating good projects they should have a pyramid like system, where you qualify your project as being innovative and creative, and among those innovative and creative projects that qualifies to be inside the pyramid you can select top 20, and then top 10 then 1 winner.

As far as I could read from the teachers explanation, no reason was given for being eliminated, which is fucking stupid. So yes, ppl who defends the Zookeepers management probably escaped from a zoo.

we should have a technology institute that buys the rights of such things and gives the ppl free (to bind those brains) studying in our country

USA recruits talents from all over the world, or they even can't build a single bolt by themself.

You mean the nation should hold the intellectual property rights so people who are smart and willing to put their time and money into inventing something should not earn a fortune ?

isn't that pretty much walking on the path of communism ?

If I may be frank here... I don't think that RTE government or any government would give the inventor his due.

In a free market the intellectual property right would be respected, and the inventor would get a chance to earn a fortune with some capitalistic partners, who in return would milk the product for what it's worth.

But if the government bought the intellectual property rights, the inventor would not get a chance to earn a fortune together with a capitalistic partner. The government would give the man something like 3-4 times his annual salary and kick him out of the office of property rights.
