Around six months after giving a 1,000-year deadline for Earth's destruction, famous theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking now says humans need to abandon Earth and look for a new planet in order to survive.

In BBC's Expedition New Earth documentary, Professor Hawking said humans must colonize Mars within the next 100 years as the world we live in now is getting increasingly precarious due to climate change, overdue asteroid strikes, epidemics and population growth.

According to Hawking, living on other planets will be easier than surviving on the current one thanks to technological and scientific advances.

In the documentary, he enlisted engineering expert Danielle George and his own former student, Christophe Galfard, to find out if there is a way to move to different planets.

In November 2016, Hawkings said "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years, By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race."

Space agencies and science fiction writers alike have long been fascinated by Mars -- one of the closest planets to Earth.

The Soviet Union and United States started aiming probes there in the 1960s.

For the past four years NASA has had a robot, Curiosity, on the planet searching for life.

It has sent back photographs of the planet's surface whose grey rocks look much like those of Atacama.

NASA plans to send a second robot there in 2018. In 2020, Russia and the European Space Agency also aim to send one to drill the Martian soil.

That's still quite generous from him. Even if we leave on the very last day, I will not go beyond the year 2096.

So no wonder that Musk guy is aiming for 2030.
 
If stephen hawking lived 1000 years ago he would also talk about colonizing mars.
 
Its useless to search no other planet has the same exact condition as earth

a) Some have less Gravity and that messes with blood flow or growth of organs
b) Some have less oxygen/nitrogen ration again lethal for Humans
c) Some have toxic water or no water or Toxic chemicals
d) No other planet with perfect placement of Moon as with Earth which controls our tides
e) No presence of correct temperature
f) No presence of perfect % pressure with out it our viens will explode or blood will boil

3,000,000,000,000 Billion years of work done by Evolution , just can't be replicated by 30-40 years of Human colonization effort.

We can't teraform shit even if we knew a Meteor will destroy planet in 5 year time

Even if we did sent out a SOS , rocket to nearest star system (it will have good 100 Years ) to reach the nearest star and 100 years for transmitted data to come back.

At present Humans can't live beyond few years in orbit before seeing "Serious" health side effects

Sure we colonize Mars..and then start worrying about those pesky Mars destroying asteroids.

We need to build a wall to keep the asteroids out. It will be an amazing wall!
Or colonize two planets!!

To the list of global problems the world’s oceans are facing, you can add another: They’re losing oxygen.

The Pacific Ocean off the U.S. West Coast, from central California to Alaska, is one of the hardest-hit areas.

Whether you’re looking at an ocean or a glass of beer, the same fundamental chemistry holds true.

“When you warm up the water, it holds less gas,” University of Washington oceanographer Curtis Deutsch said.

We land-dwelling humans might understandably focus on air temperature as an indicator of climate change—we feel it every day on our skin. Yet very little of the heat trapped by our greenhouse gas pollution stays in the atmosphere.

Over the past half-century, more than 90 percent of the extra heat has gone into the oceans.

Deutsch is part of a team of oceanographers that has documented how climate change is squeezing the air out of oceans in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Deutsch calls the temperate North Pacific – from the Russian Far East to the U.S. West Coast – a hotspot for the loss of ocean oxygen.

“That whole swath of ocean seems to be declining in oxygen,” he said. “Quite likely, we’re sitting on one of the areas of the world’s coastline that is going to experience relatively strong depletions of oxygen in this century.”

Oxygen levels in the sea vary for lots of reasons, including biological activity, coastal pollution and short-term cycles like El Niño. The scientists detected a “widespread negative O2 trend” apart from any year-to-year variations over the past half-century.

The sea's oxygen content increased slightly until the mid-1980s, then rapidly declined afterward.

A recent study by German researchers found that the world’s oceans have lost about 2 percent of their oxygen over the past 50 years. Nearly a fifth of all the lost oxygen has gone missing from the North Pacific Ocean, according to the team from Germany’s Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research.

“Far-reaching implications for marine ecosystems and fisheries can be expected,” the German team concluded in the journal Nature in February.

Oceans are shedding oxygen more than twice as fast as warming water alone can explain.

Why they are losing oxygen so fast isn't entirely clear. A slowdown in the currents that stir up the oceans is a likely factor. Oceanographers expect vertical mixing to diminish as climate change warms surface waters more than colder, denser waters beneath them.

Other factors, including an increase in fishes’ and other animals’ demand for oxygen under water, could also be at play. In warmer water, metabolisms speed up. So ocean creatures need to breathe more oxygen to survive, even as their oxygen supply is slowly being choked off.

“The loss of oxygen should be right at the top of the list of global ocean ecosystem concerns,” Deutsch said. “The changes in oxygen are big in many places.”

In a bit of a vicious cycle, robbing the seas of oxygen could worsen global warming by increasing the oceans’ production of nitrous oxide. The “laughing gas” anesthetic is a byproduct of bacterial activity in low-oxygen settings. Nitrous oxide is also a potent greenhouse gas, able to trap nearly 300 times as much heat, molecule for molecule, as carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas.

What the af ? :O Earth is merely 4.5 billion years old while universe is 14 approx.

Even if we did sent out a SOS , rocket to nearest star system (it will have good 100 Years ) to reach the nearest star and 100 years for transmitted data to come back.

With current technology, a rocket will take thousands of years to reach nearest star system that is Alpha Centurai and Proxima. But with Ion/fusion or nuclear technology, we can reach up to 20% of light or more. Hence it will take approx. 20 years to reach that system.

Ehhh 100 years for data transmission ? Again what the afff ....data will take 9 years for back and forth data transmission from Alpha Centurai. Obviously it will be a large a data send in multiple chunks accordingly. P.S we have been broadcasting transmission signals in outer space since the days of first radios and TVs.
