When danger lurks in coastal waters or where discreet or covert operation is necessary, some unusual products of South Koreas VOGO Company may well have a part to play.
Photographs on the companys stand (B109 in Hall 1) depict small manned submersibles, as well as a dual-role craft. The SDV 340 manned submersible, which has been in service with the ROK Navy since 2005, is VOGOs first product, while a further five are operational with the countrys Naval Special Warfare Brigade. Carrying crew of three, the SDV 340 is 7.9m in length and has a 45nm range at 3.5kts.
At 13m long, the SDV 1000W incorporates some systems proven on the SDV 340, but its submerged range is reduced to 25nm. However, when operating on the surface, it has a range of 150nm and is capable of 35kts.
The SDV 1000W is promoted as a cost-effective solution for most littoral warfare. With diesel electric propulsion, this unusual craft offers high speed on the surface or, using electric motors, it runs stealthily under water.
With a payload of 1.5 tonnes, it can accommodate 10 people and, using an individual electrical built-in breathing system, allows a three-hour dive at an 18m depth, without the risk of decompression and oxygen poisoning.
Procurement of the SDV 1000W for the ROK Navy will begin next year, but to date orders for the proposed Midget 200 have yet to be received. Some 30m in length and displacing 180 tonnes, it will have a surface range of 1,500nm and carry a team of commandos in addition to the crew of four. Midget 200 has two external tubes, each accommodating a heavy torpedo, while its onboard defence includes passive, intercept and obstacles avoidance sonar suites, as well as ESM/E
