The four frigates India has contracted from Russia last week during the summit meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin will bring in superior stealth technology and augment force levels, officials say.
The basic structures of two of these ships are already ready in Russia, they add.
As per agreement two more ships are to be built in India with technology transfer.
The Inter-Governmental Agreement was signed last week for four additional Krivak or follow-on Teg class stealth frigates expected to cost about $4 billion. The final deal is yet to be concluded and officials said price negotiations will begin soon.
The Indian Navy designs stealth warships and senior officers had stated on several occasions that it is now a ‘builders Navy’ and vessels would not be imported. As to why India was buying the frigate now, sources said it was an old order which was held up due to engine issues with Ukraine.
The deal got delayed due to tensions between Russia and Ukraine over Crimea. “It has now been resolved,” one official said.
