The Australian government today warned its citizens of a possible terrorist attack in "locations frequented by Westerners" in Kuala Lumpur
"Terrorists may be planning attacks in and around Kuala Lumpur. Attacks could be indiscriminate and may target Western interests or locations frequented by Westerners.
"You should be particularly vigilant at this time," it said in a travel advisory published today Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website, smartraveller.gov.au.
It maintains that Australians should reconsider travel to the east coast of Sabah, where several tourists have been kidnapped by militants group Abu Sayyaf.
Australia's warning comes after the British government raised the terror threat level for East Malaysian resorts last week.
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office advised against all travel to the Sabah eastern islands, raising threat level from "general" to "high".
When contacted a police spokesperson said the inspector general maintains police are on "high alert".
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar last month said police will increase surveillance in public areas, but denied there is a list of likely terror hotspots in the city.
Khalid said this after Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Abdullah mentioned several spots, including shopping district Bukit Bintang and various malls in Kuala Lumpur, as potential targets.
Last September, the United States and Australian embassies in Kuala Lumpur warned of possible terror attack the touristy Bukit Bintang.
Police had said that it is working with the intelligence units of the two countries on the matter.
In November, police confirmed a leaked communique on the presence of suicide bombers in Kuala Lumpur and Sabah but said action is being taken to neutralise the threat.
"We will not allow such things to happen," Khalid told Malaysiakini.
Dozens have been arrested over the past year for suspected links with the militant group IS.
