(www.MaritimeCyprus.com) SpaceX has announced a Starlink Maritime service that will bring satellite Internet service to large boats for $5,000 per month and an up-front hardware purchase of $10,000.

"From merchant vessels to oil rigs to premium yachts, Starlink Maritime allows you to connect from the most remote waters across the world, just like you would in the office or at home," the service's webpage says.

Starlink Maritime advertises download speeds of up to 350Mbps and the ability to "pause and un-pause service at any time" while being billed in one-month increments. There's also "secure fleet management" and remote monitoring to "manage your Starlink fleet from a single portal."

The user terminals shown on the Starlink Maritime page look similar to those used in Starlink's home Internet service. But SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wrote on Twitter that Starlink Maritime uses "dual, high performance terminals, which are important for maintaining the connection in choppy seas & heavy storms." The terminals are also "ruggedized for relentless salt spray & extreme winds & storms in deep ocean," he wrote.

Musk acknowledged that the $5,000 monthly charge is obviously "premium pricing" but added that "it is way cheaper & faster than alternatives."

"SpaceX was paying $150k/month for a much worse connection to our ships!" Musk wrote.

The Starlink Maritime unveiling came shortly after the Federal Communications Commission granted SpaceX's application to operate consumer and enterprise Earth stations in motion (ESIM) throughout the US. The approval includes moving vehicles, aircraft, and vessels in US territorial waters and international waters.

  • Maersk is adding SpaceX’s Starlink to more than 330 container ships.
  • Maersk said the installation of the Starlink internet service is expected to be complete by the first quarter of next year.
  • The satellite network is set to provide internet speeds of over 200 Mbps for use on the ships.

MOL to Install Starlink Satellite Internet on Over 200 Ships

SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink is continuing to increase its presence in the commercial maritime sector with Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announcing a deal to roll out the service on more than 200 ocean-going ships.

MOL said it aims to have approximately 140 ships equipped with the Starlink system by the end of fiscal year 2023. In total, MOL is planning to deploy the service on 233 ocean-going vessels managed by MOL Group ship management companies.

The company said its decision to use Starlink is in recognition of the critical need to enhance the wellbeing of seafarers, especially due to the growing shortage of seafarers in the shipping industry.

Starlink will enable crew members on MOL-operated ships to access movies, television and video calls with family and friends back home, significantly improving their onboard communication experience and overall wellbeing. Starlink will also help enhance the digital transformation of maritime operations by enabling real-time information sharing between ships and shoreside support teams, improving operational efficiency, and providing support in case of onboard issues.

MOL had previously trialed Starlink on several vessels, confirming up to a 50-fold increase in internet speeds.

This announcement follows other major shipping companies’ plans to adopt Starlink. Maersk recently announced its intention to deploy Starlink on its fleet of over 330 owned containerships, while Hapag-Lloyd also aims to roll out the technology across its fleet, with activation expected in 2024. Anglo-Eastern, a Hong Kong-based ship manager, is also planning to install Starlink on more than 200 of its managed ships.
