At a time when the J&K Police is busy quelling pro-Pak protests, a police officer has married a Muzaffarabad resident in Srinagar, thus rejuvenating the cross-Line of Control (LoC) bonds.
This marriage was solemnised in a Srinagar on Tuesday evening at a hotel where close relatives and friends of both families attended the function.
Bridegroom Owais Geelani, who is a Sub-Inspector from north Kashmir and posted in Srinagar, married Faiza Geelani, who hails from Muzzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir (Azad Kashmir). The bride, a post graduate in education, planning and management from National University of Modern Languages, Islamabad, and her 13 family members arrived from Muzaffarabad in “Carvan-e-Aman” bus on August 29 amid the unrest in the Valley.
The two families are related to each other but were separated during the Partition.
Had the things been normal, the marriage would have been solemnised in a “big way” at Bandipora which is the native place of Geelani. However, due to the unrest the venue was shifted to a hotel in Srinagar.
“We are hopeful that this will marriage bring peace in the region and also end the hostilities between the two countries as the divided families are the worst victims of acrimony,” said father of the bridegroom Shabir Geelani Shabir, a retired SSP.
The bridegroom’s family had sent “mehndi’ (henna) in the peace bus on July 25 when the “Carvan-e-Aman” bus plied after three weeks’ suspension due to the unrest following the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani. The cross-LoC bus service is available only for the divided families who have relatives on both sides of the LoC.
After his retirement, Shabir visited Muzaffarabad first time in 2014 where he suggested to his cousin the match of his son for his daughter.
“I called up my son Owais and he agreed. We performed the nikkah there,” he said.
