Sri Lanka : Sri Lankan President invited for Commonwealth Games closing ceremony

Sri Lankan President invited for Commonwealth Games closing ceremony

Mon, Oct 11, 2010, 09:09 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 11, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been invited to participate in the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in India.

Sri Lankan President has been invited as an "honoured guest" for the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games to be held on October 14, an Indian official confirmed to Indian media.

State-owned English weekly Sunday Observer said that the invitation to the President was intended to show India's support for the Sri Lanka's bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Indian media reports also said that Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris is to visit India on Wednesday (13) to hold discussions with his Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna.

Prof. Peiris is reportedly scheduled to deliver the R. K. Mishra Memorial Lecture on "Growth, Equity and Security: Constitutional Imperatives for South Asia" on October 15.

Meanwhile, Krishna is scheduled to arrive in Colombo later in the month on an official visit.

During his visit he is expected to tour the North to observe the progress of the resettlement of displaced Tamil people in the former war-torn region and hold discussions on the utilization of Indian grants.

After his failed campaign to stop Sri Lanka's offensive against the Tamil Tigers, the likes of David Miliband and his hangers-on must be angry after hearing this news.

(On another note, it's a pretty smart move by India to counter Chinese influence, as we all know politicians just love attention)

who? :what:

David Miliband...

I am still amused thinking about how he and the French foreign minister jet-setted to Sri Lanka to try and stop the offensive against the LTET. They even wanted the Swedish foreign minister to come along but he was denied a visa by SL.

Sri Lanka rejects West 'lectures'

Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa has again ruled out a ceasefire with Tamil Tiger rebels and says the West should not lecture him about it.

He was speaking a day after visiting UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French counterpart Bernard Kouchner had called for a truce.

On the eve of the visit by the ministers, Sri Lankan authorities announced they had denied Sweden's Foreign Minister Carl Bildt a visa to join the peace mission -- prompting a diplomatic row with the European Union.

A Sri Lankan foreign ministry official indicated that Colombo felt it had already done enough by letting in Miliband and Kouchner as international pressure for a ceasefire grows.

"The Swedish minister also wanted to jump on that bandwagon and we said no," the official said. "Some think they can land up at our airport and expect a red-carpet treatment."

Bildt described the snub as "exceedingly strange behaviour" and said he had recalled the Swedish ambassador to Colombo.

- Failed to stop the Sri Lanka's offensive against the LTTE
- Failed to get the UN Human Rights Council to censor Sri Lanka
- Failed to get the Security Council to even discuss the issue
- Failed to convince India and China not to support Sri Lanka
- His only success was being able to POSTPONE the Commonwealth Games meet from being held in Sri Lanka as "punishment"

And now the SL prez gets invited to the CWG hosted by India...

It's like salt on the wounds kinda...

Britain is no more a colonial power :)

Rich isn't it? Especially considering that it was the British that brought the Tamils in to suppress the Sinhalese. The Americans have nothing on the Brits in world conquest and domination.

I myself being a Tamil was deeply concerned by the development in SriLanka. But I certainly believe the present SL government is a just one and do not give room for organizations like LTTE to form again.
