Sri Lanka : Sri Lankan government accuses Al Jazeera of attempting to tarnish image of country\'s security forces
Nov 11, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has accused the Al Jazeera News Service of attempting to tarnish the image of country's security forces by telecasting yet another story on alleged war crimes on Tamil civilians during the final stages of Sri Lanka's war against Tamil Tiger rebels.
Issuing a press release, the Media Center for National Security said the fake News telecasted with some pictures without any reliable source by the Al Jazeera television Wednesday is an attempt to tarnish the image of the government troops as well as to deteriorate the process of the Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.
Al Jazeera on Wednesday published unverified photographs showing a mound of dead bodies piled up in a trailer and an associated video clip describing that the scene appears to be a mop up operation by the Army.
Al Jazeera said it is not possible to verify the authenticity of the images obtained from Tamil contacts who have reportedly received them from some one in the Sri Lankan military.
"It is unclear why it has taken so long for them to surface," Al Jazeera noted.
The Sri Lankan government has vehemently rejected the photographs saying that remnants of the LTTE and pro-LTTE forces are attempting to revive the vanquished terrorist organization by bringing false allegations of human right violations against the troops.
The government says it has proved that the pictures published by pro-LTTE websites were fabricated.
"The government vehemently condemns and denies these fabricated stories and these futile attempts by unscrupulous local and foreign Forces aiming to cause damage to the prosperity and the image of Sri Lanka," the government said.
Morocco recently suspended the Al jazeera operations in that country because the news agency's refusal to be objective and impartial systematically tarnishes Morocco's image.
