Sri Lanka set a zero poverty goal for 2016

Thanks 4 the info.

Social indicators of Srilanka is comparable to Indian state of Kerala,

Population----> 33.3 million(Kerala), 22.3million(SLanka)

Pop Density-----> 860/sqkm(KL), 323/sqkm(SL)

Population growth----> 0.49% (KL), 0.91%(SL)

Birth rate ----> 17.1 births/1,000(KL), 17.04 births/1,000(SL)

Literacy rate-----> 94%(KL), 91.2%(SL)]

Poverty -----> 10%,6.2%(SL)

Life expectancy ----> 74yrs(KL), 75.9yrs(SL)

HDI-----> 0.790(KL), 0.715(SL)

Infant mortality ----> 12/1000 (KL), 9/1000 (SL)

Kerala is doing good in HDI but its GDP per income is no where near Sri Lanka..GDP per capita in SL is $3500(PPP $7500) while Kerala is still around 1500...If you take out war torn areas in SL , its even higher

Area wise, Kerala is smaller than Srilanka but the population of Kerala is more than Srilanka. Also,compared to other Indian states,industrialization is less in Kerala.Thats why it is lagging in Percapita.

GDP percapita of indian state Maharashtra is higher than Kerala.But Maharashtra has more % people living in poverty than Kerala.

Finally some one in South Asia Is gonna eradicate Poverty completely

All the best to Sri Lanka may all South Asia follow you

Best of luck, hope the mission succeeds. Actually, I'm a bit jealous. Compared to the ridiculously low literacy rate, catastrophically high population growth rate, and economic decline in my own country, Sri-Lanka seems like some rich Nordic utopia. I wonder when, if ever, poverty in Pakistan will begin being eradicated. Frankly, we could learn a thing or two from Sri-Lanka.

That's the end goal for all of us! It's not rich right now though, by 2017 GDP per capita will still only be $5,000 (PPP$9,100) according to the IMF.

It seems to me eradication of complete poverty is the only the easy half of the battle; building a knowledge-based developed nation (and escaping the middle income trap) appears much more difficult.

I think we did luck out on good governance, at least for the time being. The Government seems genuinely concerned with developing the country, and there is quite a lot of infrastructure work being done. Corruption levels are about the same (or marginally lower) compared to China according to the 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index, so there's room for improvement but it isn't too bad.

I hope you guys elect some great leaders to lead your country forward!

PS: Never thought I'd find another Sagan fan here!

Sri Lanka surpasses mid-term targets of Millennium Development Goals

July 05, Colombo: Despite the three-decade long war against terrorism and a devastating tsunami in 2004 and being affected by the global recession, Sri Lanka has successfully integrated Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in to the national development agenda and has surpassed the mid-term targets.

Speaking at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Senior Minister of International Monetary Cooperation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning of Sri Lanka Dr. Sarath Amunugama said Sri Lanka had been a trend setter in integrating Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) effectively in to the national development agenda and ensuring realization of these targets in a number of development areas.

Sri Lanka, surpassing mid-term targets, has slashed the poverty level from 15.2 percent in 2006/07 to 6.5 percent in 2012 and set a zero poverty goal for 2016.

Minister Amunugama attributed Sri Lanka's success mainly to better performances in terms of child mortality, nutrition, schooling, access to safe drinking water, sanitation and housing compared to many countries.

Sri Lanka has the best indicators for child and maternal health and access to primary health care in South Asia.

Reducing the infant mortality rate to 9 per 1,000 live births and the Maternal Mortality Rate to 30 per 100,000 live births in 2010 was a significant achievement when compared with many affluent countries, he noted.

Under the MDG of Environmental Sustainability, the mid-term targets of 2010 have already been achieved with water and sanitation.

He pointed out that Sri Lanka has been committed to ensure gender equality many decades before the introduction of MDGs.

Sri Lanka's immunization system and its efforts in tackling malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS were meeting great success and education targets were being met. Sri Lanka was using emerging technologies to help it meet these targets and there was a greater focus on science and vocational training.

Minister Amunugama also pointed out that the developmental and technological needs vary from country to and therefore, a systems-oriented approach to reach the MDG targets is more suitable than a "one-size-fits-all" approach.

He said middle income countries, such as Sri Lanka, face specific economic, social and environmental challenges. One such concern is unexpected weather patterns that trigger droughts and floods causing damage to the country's food and energy production.

"We are still vulnerable to external economic shocks, but have the potential to advance in economic strength if forward looking culture supportive of technology induced growth is achieved," he said.

The Senior Minister said Sri Lanka, while committed to meeting the Millennium Development Goals, is ready to help the region sharing its experience not in only achieving MDGs, but also in terms of establishing peace and stability in the region.

Good luck & God speed.

Let there be at least one nation in S Asia where prosperity abounds .

Thanks, fellow Saganite. Hope both our countries succeed in this endeavour. :cheers:

Wow- Kerala's doing something right! The rest of India needs to take notice and follow their lead.

@Topic- nice work SL,

Correct that as Kerala WAS doing something before Independence and just after Independence. It was that Hindu kingdom along with Mysore Kingdom who actually bothered about the people. They were VERY well placed during Independence .....but post Independence its growth has been pathetic.

Its last 40 years of history is NOT something India should EVER bother to emulate.

SL has been doing a good job though ....... except for their nasty habit of enslaving the local Tamil population.
