Sri Lanka launches massive program to develop 14,000 villages
Sri Lanka launched a massive program to develop 14,000 villages in the country, under the Gama Neguma National Development Project.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa today launched the "One Project for One Village" program under 2012 Jathika Saviya - Gama Neguma in a ceremony held at the Wevita Maithri Vidyalaya grounds in Bandaragama.
The program, implemented under the Gama Neguma development programme, which comes under the purview of Ministry of Economic Development, aims to revitalize backward villages and uplift the livelihood of the people in 14,000 villages across the country.
The programme was simultaneously launched in the 14,000 villages throughout the country today.
Under this programme, the projects wanted by the village are selected by a planning committee. Every family in the village concerned is a member of that committee. Accordingly, the project wanted by the village is selected with the consensus of 80 per cent of the committee membership.
In Bandaragama, the President commenced the project to renovate the Wevita reservoir today. The President also opened a Divi Neguma - Green House in the village.
Ministers, Basil Rajapaksa, Bandula Gunawardena, Rathnasiri Wikramanayaka, Reginold Cooray, Deputy Ministers, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Nirmala Kothalawala, Western Provincial Council Chief Minister, Prasanna Ranatunga, Provincial Council Members, and Secretaries to Ministries were present at the ceremony.
