Sri Lanka India ties hinge on Tamils' issue: India PM

India on Friday said it has asked Sri Lanka to take "effective measures" to address the concerns of displaced Tamils, as relations between the two neighbours would hinge on the issue.

Recalling his meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakshe at Shram-el-Sheikh this week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the Rajya Sabha that "bulk" of the meeting was focussed on the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils.


"We are deeply concerned. I explained to him (Rajapakshe) we have legitimate concern about the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils. It has a bearing on Sri Lanka's relations with India." PM Singh said.


"I emphasised to him that he must take all effective measures to provide meaningful relief and rehabilitation," Singh added.


Singh was responding to the Communist Party of India member D Raja who wanted to know the outcome of his meeting with the Sri Lankan President.


"I spent considerable amount of my time in my meeting with Sri Lankan President discussing the Tamil problem. I expressed our concern about the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils, about 3 lakh people who are internally displaced and living in 33 camps," he said.


Singh was replying to clarifications sought on his statement about his meetings with world leaders at the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Egypt. He also informed Rajapakshe that Colombo has to create conditions for meeting "legitimate political aspirations" of the Tamils under the devolution package.

He is not, He is well educated Person, without indian help srilanka cannot overcome LTTE. he is talking about rehabilitation of tamil people who is still in camps.

India did gave the defencive weapons & protect sea lanes from LTTE & also gave some intelligence about LTTE hideout. In srilanka civil war IA has significant role

Dear Praveen, defensive weapons weren't just enough for the sri lankan army to defeat the LTTE, they needed offensive weapons, which india couldnt provide due to indian tamil factor and may be india wasnt ever sincere with sri lanka in finishing of LTTE. It was due to the offensive weapons provided to Sri Lanka that it crushed LTTE in such a short span of time, which the defensive weapons couldn't do for decades.
As per blocking of sea lanes, well if there was such a blockage, then i dont know why the sri lankan defence ministry used to issue statements & videos of destroying LTTE transport ships by sri lankan navy.
As for intelligence, it would be a meager contribution which might have no real value to sri lankans or if there was some good intelligence provided it must have been not enough.

Dear Praveen, kindly do study the link which u have provided, india did not interfere to defeat LTTE, they came to make peace, as they wanted the sri lankan government to give LTTE a pie in the sri lankan politics, which would have made india more in control of sri lanka through tamils. LTTE was the creation of india, but sometimes the dog bites back the master, which LTTE did, after taking 1200+ casualties, the indians withdrew.
This intervention was not to defeat the LTTE, plz read the end para of the article u refered about the hate sri lankans had developed for indians after this intervention.

IPKF landed in srilanka is to overthrows LTTE(not Tamil civilian). To end the Civil confilt but the SL politician make use of it againt tamils to gain potitics. Even SL goverment got links with LTTE that is proven in many occasion. LTTE is mainly funded by CIA
