Sri Lanka in talks with China over highway projects

COLOMBO, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government on Saturday said that it is in talks with China to extend a highway linking the capital and the deep south.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the government is having talks with China to fund the project connecting Colombo and Hambantota in the south.

The highway which already connects Colombo to the southern town of Galle and Colombo to the southern town of Matara was to be extended to Hambantota as part of the project plan of the former government.

However the new government which took office in January this year had decided to review some of the Chinese funded projects following allegations of corruption and lack of transparency when the deals were originally signed.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe however said that the highway projects will continue, with proper procedures being followed.

He also said that talks will be held with a Chinese company to go ahead with the third stage of another highway project known as the 'Outer Circular Highway' project.

Once completed, the Outer Circular Highway will interconnect the major highways in Sri Lanka.

The prime minister said that the government has also decided to commence work on a highway connecting Colombo and the central town of Kandy and the first stage will be constructed with funding from Japan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The prime minister also rejected allegations that the new government is taking political revenge on the former government by launching investigations into some of the projects.

He said that the investigations are purely to expose corruption in some of the deals and not take political revenge.

May 30, Singapore: Defense cooperation between Sri Lanka and China was the main focus when Sri Lanka's State Minister of Defense Ruwan Wijewardene met with the Deputy Chief of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army Admiral Sun Jianguo Friday (29) in Singapore.

State Minister Wijewardene, leading a delegation to the Shangri La Dialogue 2015 in Singapore held discussions with the Chinese defense official on the sidelines of the meeting.

During the meeting both sides have agreed that the defense dialogue initiated last year was an important mechanism to streamline defense cooperation between the two countries and Minister Wijewardene invited the Chinese side to the 2nd Sri Lanka - China Defence Dialogue which would be held in Sri Lanka in the latter half of this year.

Referring to the warm and friendly relations that exist between Sri Lanka and China, Admiral Jianguo has said that, China would continue to provide assistance to Sri Lanka including in defense matters.

Minister Wijewardene noted that the successful state visit by President Maithripala Sirisena to China in March this year emphasized the importance given by the new Government in further strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.

Minister Wijewardene also thanked the Chinese high official for the training and other assistances provided to Sri Lanka.

The 14th Asia Security Summit, hosted by the International Institute for Security Studies (IISS) will take place from 29 - 31 May in Singapore. Defence Chiefs and Ministers of over 26 nations are participating in the Dialogue.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Mr. B M U D Basnayake, Commander of the Army, Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Navy, Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Air Force, and Defense Ministry Officials accompanied the Minister.

Everyone in my family voted for MR in the election before the last one before we went to UK. My friends were telling me how we voted for him and escaped consequences and how MR is ruining the country.
