Sri Lanka & China Signed Six Agreements

Sri Lanka and China signed six agreements to enhance co-operation in the fields of technology, industry, information technology and construction at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday.

The signing of agreements took place in the presence of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne and Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang.

The two Governments signed an economic and technical co-operation agreement. The signatories were Finance Ministry Secretary Dr P.B. Jayasundera and Chinese Assistant Commerce Minister Wang Chao.

The two Governments also signed an agreement for the maintenance and development of the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) which is a donation from China.

The Road Development Authority (RDA) signed an agreement with a Chinese company for the construction of the last stage of the Southern Expressway from Pinnaduwa to Godagama.

RDA Chairman Ranjith Premasiri and National Technical Import and Export Corporation in China President Tang Yi signed the agreement on behalf of the two sides.

The two Governments inked another agreement for the enhanced co-operation in the field of Information and Communications. An MoU was also signed for the development of maritime ports. Acting Ports and Aviation Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Chinese Transport Minister Lin Shenjin were the signatories.

The second phase of the Hambantota Port will commence under this agreement and the Chinese Government, will provide a loan of US $600m which is payable within 20 years.

A certificate of donation by ZTE Corporation of China was also presented to Hambantota District Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa by ZTE Corporation Chairman Hou Weei.

This grant of US $500,000, would be utilized for the promotion of IT literary among the youth community in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka gets more Chinese Assistance

The Chinese Government yesterday reiterated its unreserved support to Sri Lanka in international affairs and vowed continued assistance for the economic and social development of Sri Lanka.

Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang gave this assurance when he met Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne at the latter's office.

Addressing the media after a meeting with visiting Chinese delegation headed by Vice Premier Dejiang, Premier Jayaratne emphasized that Sino Lanka relations turned into a new leaf after President Mahinda Rajapaksa came into power.

He said China-Sri Lanka friendship dateing back to centuries are being further cemented by the economic and social assistance granted by the Chinese Government.

"China has become a major development partner of Sri Lanka and its grants to Sri Lanka exceeded US$ 35 million for the past four years". The Premier added that China has already provided concessionary loans to the tune of US$ 2323 million.

He said discussions with the Chinese delegation focused on direct flight between Beijing and Colombo and Shanghai and Colombo. He said this type of initiative will upgrade tourism in both countries.

The Prime Minister added that the Sri Lanka delegation elaborated the enormous investment potential in the North and the East.

He had requested the visiting delegation to make Chinese companies aware of the enormous investment potential in Sri Lanka .

It was also discussed on how Sri Lanka would be promoted as a tourist hub in China at this meeting, the Premier said. Ministry Secretary S. Amarasekera was also present at the news conference.

Chinese to set up US$ 500,000 telecom training facility

Chinese state-owned telecommunication service provider ZTE Corporation says it would set up a US$ 500,000 training facility in Sri Lanka.

ZTE Corporation chairman, Hou Weigui said the facility would be donated to the government of Sri Lanka. He presented a token of this donation to parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, chairman Tharunyata Hetak, when he visited the island recently.

ZTE said the training facility would provide the latest technological updates and would facilitate around 500 trainees a year under the Tharunyata Hetal programme.

Sri Lanka Telecom would coordinate efforts to set up this training facility and ZTE said it hoped to use the facility, once completed, to train its clients and engineers based in South Asia, paving the way for Sri Lanka to be a training hub in the region.
