Sri Lanka Buddhist monks demand halal boycott.

Sri Lanka's nationalist Buddhist monks and their supporters launched a campaign Sunday to boycott Islamic halal-slaughtered meat amid mounting religious tensions in the ethnically divided nation.

Thousands of men and women led by hundreds of monks of the Bodu Bala Sena, or Buddhist Force, staged a rally outside Colombo to announce the boycott, demanding that shops clear their stocks of halal food by April.

"More than 90 percent of the population are Buddhists, Hindus and Christian and therefore there is no justification to force them to eat halal products," Buddhist monk Kirama Wimala Jothi said in a statement.

He urged Sri Lanka's non-Muslim majority to boycott any product with the halal label and asked the government to outlaw Islamic clerics issuing such certification.

The halal method of killing an animal requires it to have its throat slit.

The issue has raised new tensions in a country emerging from nearly four decades of ethnic strife which has claimed at least 100,000 lives, according to UN estimates.

The rally came less than three weeks after President Mahinda Rajapakse urged monks not to incite religious hatred and violence amid reports of a wave of attacks targeting Muslims.

The Buddhist Force has disassociated itself with violence saying that there were "duplicate groups" pretending to be them and stirring up trouble.

Less than 10 percent of Sri Lanka's population of 20 million are Muslims.

Sri Lanka ended its 37-year Tamil separatist war in May 2009 with the crushing of Tamil rebels, who were mainly Hindus.

Hindus constitute about 12 percent of the population.

The heading is misleading..It's a called by a fringe group of Buddhist nationalist's NOT by Buddhist Monks and the boycott is not against Halal per se..But against a private organisation that have taken over the rights of issueing the certificate at a fee..Vast majority of the population concider these groups just rabble rousers and give no credence

Why there is a recent increase of attack on muslim population??

Is Islamic radicalization seen as a threat in Srilanka??

The attacks though being blown up by the media have been few and far between..Mainly due to land disputes than anything else

Last few years especially since the war ended there have been attempts to radicalize certain Muslim communities in the east by extreamists Wahhabi's and jihadists groups..There have been attacks on traditional and Sufi mosques by these fringe groups(Never on other religious communities)..Sometimes enforcing Islamic dress codes on women etc..I think the govt had taken steps nullify it..What i remember is that they even deported several foreign preachers who espoused these ideals to Tamil Nadu..

Traditionally Sri Lankan Moors and Malays have been very secular islamic communities..But yes there is a growing worry about Saudi funded radicalization of muslim youth

Govt. of Srlanka should make sure the society of its country not to be polarized by these Islamic radicals.

The Sri lankan government is very capable and is watching the whole nation with a microscope. I trust it to clamp down on any threats with an iron fist. Nothing will destabilize Sri lanka.

Whatever the reason is, it can attract so called defender of Islam to your country. Be careful. Post-2014, these defenders of Islam may target you too as they will be looking for jobs.

Terrorism is a global phenomenon and it starts with these fringe groups. Curb it before it reaches a critical point.

After fighting for decades against the Bhaarti sponsored Tamil terrorism........I am sure they are quite familiar with what terrorism is.

Religious issues are highy sensitive subjects..Govt's need to thread carefully here..But to reiterate the issue about Halal certification is primarily a legal one..Wether the private organisation have the legal mandate to issue it or does it have the right to dictate a fee for it is or if it has the mandate to do so from the ministry of religious affairs is a need for debate

@Gibbs These extremists don't accept any law. You have seen in West where few people are asking for Sharia. Legal or illegal, I hope your govt. will check this. All the best to you all.

Why do this world is so fascinated and takes execuse in blaming all the ills of Muslim society by saying that wahabi and Saudi Funds....When people do not feel hesitated to gallop all the funds from Saudi or Wahabi organization then why to blame them for their impact. Rather than blaming outsiders...look at inside...I see that Wahabi and Saudi are made scapegoat most of the time for all sins of muslims so as to pretend that remaining folks like Hindu,Muslim (Non Wahabi) and Budhists are saints of this world...

"Halal" isn't a standard given by Sri Lankan standardization authority, so it is illegal to use on products.
Can you tell more about it ? What's the major reason, the protest and what are legal and illegal ? How are the conditions ?
