Highlights
  • Israel’s anti-tank guided missile ‘Spike MR’ to be manufactured in Hyderabad.
  • The Indian Army has already carried out trials of ‘Spike MR’ to its satisfaction.
  • 'Spike MR' missile, which has a range of up to 2.5 km, was displayed at Hardware Park in Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: The city, which is the hub of India's missile power, is now gearing up to give the nation's defence forces the best available fire power in the world with Israel's anti-tank guided missile `Spike MR' to be manufactured here.

Once the manufacturing of'Spike MR' begins in Hyderabad, Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS), the joint venture between India's Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd and Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd set up to manufacture the missile, will be able to deliver 200 missiles in a month.

Displayed at the Hardware Park in Hyderabad on Thursday , the Israeli 'Spike MR' missile, which has a range of up to 2.5 km, gives a sense of how India could deal with its enemy. The Indian Army has already carried out trials of `Spike MR' to its satisfaction. The trials were conducted over a period of one year by firing in plains, deserts, in day time, and at night. The distance of the missile is as per what has been defined in the operational requirements of the Indian Army. "The entire infrastructure and machinery is ready . Once the government gives the go-ahead, the missiles will roll out within just a few weeks," a senior functionary of KRAS told TOI. The JV opened its state-of-art facility at the Hardware Park on Thursday .

The Spike MR is a 3rd general portable multi-purpose electro-optical missile weapon system. The launcher weight is 12 kg and the round weight is 13.7 kg. The guidance unit is a dual electro-optical seeker. The 'fire and forget' missile can be deployed from a tripod, vehicles, helicopters and marine vessels. The choice for India was between the American 'Javelin' and Israel's 'Spike'. What perhaps went in favour of Spike was Israel was willing to transfer technology and manufacture the missiles in India. The 'Made in India' missiles would also be exported.

"The anti-tank missile system is one of the most advanced in the world. It can engage tar gets at distances ranging from 200 metres to 2,500 metres. It is easy for any operator to easily and accurately engage a target," a KRAS official said.

Replying to a question about DRDO-developed anti-tank missile systems, the official said 'Spike' was of a different class."We don't have a third generation anti-tank guided missile in India today . Spike MR is a huge leap in terms of technology and capability ," he said.

It was also said that the Israeli Defence Forces were using the same anti-tank guided missile. The same missile is being used by 20 other countries.

In that case, will Israel offer the same missile to a country that India considers its enemy? "It will totally be in tandem with the rules and regulations laid down by the Government of India," the KRAS official said.

"There are different stages of manufacturing but ultimately Bharat Dynamics Ltd will complete the manufacturing," the official said when asked which agency would be responsible for placing the explosive in the missiles. Spike has other variants like Spike-SR, which is a short range version that can be fired up to a one-km, and Spike-LR, which is a long range version that can be fired up to 4 km.
