I suggest this, in WW2 the SPG can completely shoot directly at 4-5 km to against tank (ISU-152 vs Tiger, Panther).
So if PLZ-05 or 2S19 can shoot directly, how far can they shoot against MBT such as M1A2?
I have calculated based on numbers

PLZ-05 height of 3m, LOS of it will be> 6km, its It's HE shells velocity is> 900m / s

SPG shows that they are actually cheaper and more efficient tank assassins than ATGM. The PLZ-05 or the modern SPGs have a laser rangefinder, optical gunner and ballistic calculator, which is more accurate than the SPG WW2.

Theoretically on paper and in a controlled test environment yes but we all know that the real test is the real war scenarios. It requires battle proof.

It. Won't. Work

Plunging fire traditionally is a defilade fire if they are unguided. Which mean traditionally, 1 shot line up at 1 target.

Direct fire traditionally is an enfilade fire, guided or unguided. Which mean traditionally, you can target multiple target at each shot.

Unless you can accurately predict your enemy movement, or restricting your enemy movement, plunging fire does not work on fast moving target such as Armoured column.

1. The level of Performance of Ukrainian MBT's has been dismal in recent Strong Euro Challenge, showing T-64 BV may not be the best example.

2. Consider the role of an armored vehicle. MBT carries different types of rounds (Sabot, MPAT, HE etc) to handle different threats. A TD will carry mostly Sabot rounds to handle AFV's. A SPG "may" need Sabot for Armor penetration and HE for infantry support, and it cannot fulfill both roles at same time. The demand for Artillery is very high in battlefield, a SPG diverted on tank plinking role cannot support infantry for indirect fire at the same time. Its better to invest time and money in more MBT's and cheaper ATGM's.

3. The systems on howitzers are designed for indirect support of artillery fire. For direct support role, new systems for target tracking would be required.

4. 2 x teams of ATGM's will be cheaper to operate and attack MBT from different directions (concealed) rather than one SPG which needs LOS to engage MBT plus (fuel, maintenance etc) and cannot operate alone, will operate in groups.

5. Losing SPG to enemy fire means losing artillery support too.
