Fars News Agency :: VP: Iran Adopts Necessary Measures to Protect Scientists

"The president (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) issued strict orders to relevant officials at the beginning of the current (Iranian) year (started on March 21) to put protection of nuclear scientists on their working agenda," Rahimi said on the sidelines of a ceremony held here in Tehran on Tuesday to commemorate the martyrs of Iran's nuclear industry.

In January 2011, Iran's Vice-President for Science and Technology said the country has formed a special team to boost security for its scientists and researchers.

Nasrin Soltankhah told reporters that protecting the country's scientists is a serious and top agenda of her department.

"A special security task force has been formed to protect our scientists," she added.

From the news it does not appear to be an effective force at all since it is the science minister that is announcing it. If it is going to work under science ministry then every one should forget about it. Such a force should be completely independent and work under president, with its own structure and commander separate from army, police or intelligence. It should be highly trained for the single job of protecting people and stuff. If it is going to be a haphazard disorganized force working under or only for science ministry it is going to be a failure. Good personal protection forces are completely independent like US secret service with their own oath and training.

Personally i think the issue of protecting scientists is only the task of vezarate etelat (intelligence ministry) it are the secret agents in Iran that are only capable, well trained and have the talent to spot the dangers facing the elites. You just cant put up a few trained, armed policemen to guard a scientist. The people who are tasked with defending the scientist must be the best of a nation security apparatus. In Iran these people are ''sarbazane gomname emama zaman'' or translated into nameless soldiers which is again translated into ''secret agents''
these people are capable enough and have the talent to spot the dangers and react timely if necessary.

the same secret agents who caught Rigi like a rat

They should move them to Europe or US for a better chance to survive and have that liberty-just as many armchair generals here ;)

Well, it is upto you. But since Ahmadinejad failed to remove Moslehi and can not even issue orders to him, it is better if Ahmadinejad uses this opportunity to create a dedicated force for protection purposes under the control of presidency and since Moslehi has himself said that it is not his duty, he and his backers should not have any objections to it. At any rate a dedicated force is going to be better than overburdening an already overloaded ministry. The members of such a force can be selected from all the other forces members eg. police, army, IRGC, intel ministry etc etc and its members should voluntarily apply for it to keep it a highly motivated force. Once the best among the applicants have been selected, they should be rigorously trained for the sole job of protecting people and provided with best equipment available. That way, not only scientists but other VIP's can also be give protection when government feels it.

Another point Iran should keep in mind is that ministry of intelligence must investigate and uncover all militant groups in Iran.

Also Iran must secure its borders since if drugs and illegal goods can be smuggled into country it also means that weapons and bombs can come in too. Iran should start make a strip of mine field over all of its borders with barbed wires and trenches electronically watched by surface radars and cameras. Such a fool proof belt should have intermittent reinforced fortes at every 3 or 4 kilometers well equipped and hardened with an un-mined strip of land behind it in which a road can be built to reach the forte in order to watch the border areas. It is going to be expensive to build some 1000 fortes and mine the whole borders maybe costing 10 billion dollars but Iran is already paying 100 billion dollars yearly in social costs of drug smuggling alone, let alone smuggling of weapons which increase crime and smuggling of all kinds of goods without paying any custom.

Another good advice is for Iranian automobile companies to start producing a bullet/bomb proof version of one of their models which is going to be cheaper than imported models and can be given to people of importance since most assassinations happen while the target is driving.
