Israel has been accused of targeting United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon during a shelling incident in January in which one Spanish peacekeeper was killed, the Spanish newspaper El Pais reported on Sunday.

The Israel Defense Forces shelled targets in Lebanon on January 28, following the deaths of two IDF soldiers in a Hezbollah attack.

The El Pais report cited a confidential Spanish military report into the death in the shelling of Corporal Javier Soria Toledo

According to AFP, the newspaper reported that UN soldiers on the scene at the time maintained that Israel had deliberately targeted the position in which Toledo was stationed.

"Every time, they corrected the trajectory from Majidieh to the 4-28," the coordinates of Toledo's post, Corporal Ivan Lopez Sanchez, who was stationed nearby, reportedly told military investigators.

Another Spanish soldier, Sergeant Julio Xavier Garcia, echoed Sanchez, saying the shells initially fell about 500 meters north of the UN post and then they "corrected the trajectory towards the position."

A third soldier said fragmentation bombs were used in the attack and that the shelling finally appeared to target the main watch tower.

According to a UN report quoted by El Pais, Israel warned the UN peacekeepers at 11:40 A.M. not to venture out, without giving any explanation. [So basically, Israel asked the peacekeepers not to leave the base, and then shelled that same base. What a malignant rogue state. -- RFS]

Nearly 120 artillery shells, 90 mortar grenades and five projectiles were fired in the area between 11:48 A.M. and 1:43 P.M., El Pais quoted the report as saying.

Spain and Israel have agreed to carry out a joint probe into the corporal's death.

I am sure Israel will come up with some lie, maybe the freedom fighters used that place as launch pad for rockets, or maybe they used UN soldiers as the famous human shield.
