Spain is planning an event this year to attract investments for Bangladesh, as it feels more must be done to give momentum to bilateral relations.
The event would be organised by Casa Asia, a public consortium that promotes relations between Spain and the countries of Asia and the Pacific.
Spanish Foreign Minister Garcia Margallo conveyed this on Wednesday in a bilateral meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali.
The two ministers met on the sidelines of the 17th NAM Ministerial Meeting being held in the Algerian capital, Algiers, on May 28 and 29.
Ali flew into Algiers from Tokyo on Tuesday to attend this annual gathering of foreign ministers.
Apart from his Spanish counterpart, Ali also met the foreign ministers of Nepal and Fiji.
He also met the Chef de Cabinet of the UN, Susana Malcorra, who represented the UN Secretary General at the NAM meet.
The Spanish minister said Bangladesh and Spain “must work together to further energise the current momentum of bilateral relations”.
“There is much that Spain has recently committed to do in Bangladesh, and there is still more we would like to do,” Margallo was quoted as saying in a media release.
Bangladesh and Spain agreed to work towards finalising the bilateral agreements on avoidance of double taxation and cultural cooperation.
The Spanish foreign minister accepted the invitation to visit Bangladesh “at a mutually convenient time soon to sign these agreements”.
Ali also invited Spain to explore ways to contributing to the development of Bangladesh’s railway sector.
They underscored the need for further diversifying trade and investment cooperation.
According to the foreign ministry, the Spanish side confirmed arranging “yet another event this year to promote investment opportunities in Bangladesh, under the auspices of Casa Asia”.
Nepal
The foreign minister also met his Nepalese counterpart Mahendra Bahadur Pandey on the sidelines.
They expressed satisfaction at the ongoing momentum of sub-regional cooperation, and stressed the need for further intensifying these efforts for mutual benefit.
Mahmood Ali thanked Nepal for offering to host the next SAARC Summit in Nov this year.
They agreed “to further activate the process of Foreign Office consultations to exchange views on the entire gamut of bilateral relations on a periodic basis”.
Fiji
Meeting with his counterpart Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Mahmood Ali sought Fiji’s support in expanding Bangladesh’s relations with the Pacific Island countries further “to promote issues of common interest”.
He offered to provide enhanced defence training to Fiji, and invited Fiji to explore the possibility of importing high-quality pharmaceutical products from Bangladesh.
UN
The foreign minister also met Chef de Cabinet of the UN Malcorra on the sidelines.
Malcorra represented the UN Secretary General at the NAM Ministerial Meeting.
She commended Bangladesh for its contribution to UN peacekeeping and reaffirmed the UN’s “sustained cooperation” for Bangladesh to advance its development efforts.
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York AKM Abdul Momen was present with the Foreign Minister during all meetings.
