What's new

SpaceX has lost as much as 80% of the Starlink satellites launched

.
If true then operating costs will make starlink uncompetitive.
Will be exciting to see what solutions SpaceX can come up with.

Starlink is a military project, civil project is just a disguise from the start. Pentagon will save them eventually.

Thats a interesting angle.
What advantage does starlink give, that is different from regular satellites?

says specifically 80% of sats in that one launch. Starlink has several 100 launches.

Will become space junk. 42000 satellites are planned, with an average life span of 15 years, which means that 3000 satellites become space junk every year.

All sats are in decay orbits so will fall off and not become junk,

The number of satellites starlink have launched is the key, it makes other big countries impossible to shot down all their satellites.

you can subscribe to telecom without being stuck your country's laws/infra.

Sounds reasonable.
OTOH telcom is very easy to intercept for any nation that has access to the right quipment.
What advantage does Starlink give compared to regular methods, when you take into account the launch and operating costs of such a vast network of sattelites?

It's hard to disable 10's of thousands of satellites.
They are already testing connectivity on airplanes (which just means drones).

They've already been deorbited. They intentionally launch them at a very low orbit initially so they can be tested. If they work they will be sent to a higher orbit. If they fail they will be so low they deorbit automatically.
