some questions only for pilots(real, not keyboard pilots)

Most guns are 30mm caliber. A jet flying at 2 Mach has speed of about 680-700 m/s. The muzzle velocity of 30mm is 1,385 m/s, which is about 4 mach, twice as faster as the jet.

I think that you have to recheck your speeds for the 30 mm cannon. Its a lot lower, in fact just a tad faster than the Mach 2 speed of the jet. The speeds when I googled it were between 700 and 1100 m/sec.

Bring back this thread to life !

Can a fighter jet fire missiles while flying inverted? Some missiles seem to drop down for a bit and then it ignites forward. So will that work when the jet is upside down?

Can a jet flying at Mach 2 fire its guns? Or will it overtake the bullets and perhaps get shot down by itself? :-)

In this case, the bullet's speed will be its own speed + Jet's speed.

Try hurl a ball at a speed 25 km/hour from a bus which is speeding 50 km per hour. Will you(bus) over take the ball?

The speed of bullets would vary with the projectiles.

The lowest 30mm speed is for 3UOF8 HEI which is 960m/s.
3UBR8 APDS has 1120m/s.

My speed of 1380m/s was for German made 30mm rounds. Anyhow, the speeds above 800m/s support the result, aircraft flying at Mach 2 and firing would not be hit by it's own bullets.

I have a question here, in relation to a topic being discussed some pages ago.

The tiller is in commercial aircraft, i know how it works etc etc. But in a military jet, is there also a tiller or only the rudder pedals are used to steer the aircraft?

BTW, in some Russian aircraft, the tiller is on the yoke, rather than to the side. Russians do everything opposite to the Americans!
