Solar storm may down the INTERNET and satellite systems on Earth

A SOLAR Storm could wreak chaos on Earth today knocking out the internet and satellite systems, it has been warned.

A hole has opened up in the sun’s upper atmosphere and there has been an eruption of magnetic energy.

Killer electrons from a solar storm can travel up to several million miles per hour towards Earth.

Professor Joseph Pelton, of George Washington University, claimed that the risk should not be underestimated.

He said the synchronisation of the global internet is under threat.

“Massive coronal mass ejection that brings millions of tonnes of ions travelling perhaps at two million kilometres per hour, could leave the world’s economic systems and global infrastructure in shambles,” said Prof Pelton.

“What we don’t have is a global understanding that there is a much more likely danger that is increasing over time and is a very real cosmic danger that could knock out our electric power grids, kill key satellite systems for communications and navigation and defence.”

The Earth does have a natural protection from solar storms with an invisible shield known as the "magnetosphere".

It means that the only impact of the solar storm is likely to be the Northern or Southern lights.

Space Weather website said that it will be possible to see colourful skies in the Arctic.

It said: “A stream of solar wind is about to hit Earth’s magnetic field.

“The gaseous material is flowing from a canyon-shaped hole in the sun’s atmosphere.

“Arctic sky watchers can expect minor geomagnetic storms and auroras mixed with bright moonlight when the fast-moving stream arrives."

hmm still some form of internet will remain. like the one that uses fiber optic and copper wires (Wired connections) even thought it might not be world wide web but connection between countries will remain.

I don't care about the world's economy but no PDF ?? :cray:
