Sri Lanka : China appreciates Sri Lanka\'s stance on Dalai Lama\'s visit

Apr 03, Beijing: China on Friday said it appreciates Sri Lanka's stance on a visit by the Dalai Lama as Sri Lanka said it was unlikely to allow a visit by the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader.

"The Sri Lankan side fully understands and respects China's concerns on relevant issues, and we appreciate that," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said at the Friday briefing.

When questioned whether China asked the Sri Lankan government to disallow the monk's visit, Spokesperson said China has stated its position on issues concerning the Dalai Lama on multiple occasions.

"The Chinese government is firmly opposed to Dalai's engagement in separatist activities in any country under any name and excuse. This remains clear and consistent," she said.

The spokesperson said Sri Lanka is a traditionally friendly neighbor of China, and bilateral relations have been growing smoothly.

"We will make joint efforts with Sri Lanka to cement the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation."

Sri Lankan Buddhist monks have invited the Dalai Lama to make his first visit to the island after the new government came into power, but a government official has told Reuters that Colombo was unlikely to allow it.

"They can invite, but the government may not grant a visa," a top Foreign Ministry official has told Reuters.

The official has said that Sri Lanka-China relations are more important than the Dalai Lama and also Sri Lanka has not changed its stance on 'One China' policy'.

Dalai Lama is not a big shot in Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka is a secular state not a Buddhist state so the religion always comes after national interests. No Sri Lankan is losing his/her sleep over this decision so take it easy.

I was being sarcastic to him. There couldn't be any group speaking Sinhala in India.
Sinhala language itself evolved from the use of Sanskrit and Pali.
Being in the indo-aryan language group, there are plenty of similar words between Sinhala and Hindi(as an example) apart from the grammar.
