Sixteen pirates captured across Lakshadweep

New Delhi: The Indian Navy apprehended 16 pirates operating west of the Lakshadweep Islands. Indian Navy and Coast Guard are a part of 'Operation Island Watch'. The action was taken by Coast Guard and Indian Navy after a distress message received from MV Maersk Kensington at 11 am on March 26. A maritime reconnaissance aircraft-TU142 on patrol located the suspected pirate vessel and facilitated homing INS Suvarna, which was on patrol in the area, to intercept the pirate vessel. Coast Guard Ship ICGS Sangram, also on patrol, was diverted for the operations. The Pirate vessel was identified as Morteza, an Iranian Trawler, hijacked by the pirates and being used as the mother vessel for piracy operations. The pirate vessel Morteza opened fire on the naval ship and INS Suvarna engaged the pirate vessel in self defence, resulting in Morteza catching fire due to the fuel drums while the pirates and hostages jumped overboard. INS Suvarna quickly recovered the hostages and also launched a Life Raft for the pirates.

Why waste effort to rescue pirates form the sea? Now we have to feed them for the next 30 years in jail. By not allowing them to drown peacefully, we have caused financial loss to the exchequer. The CAG should come out with a report on this.

The cheap Fast attack boats are more then enough to tackle these pirates govt. should stop this wastage as it drains the Navy's budget, energy and resources.

IN strikes again...but these pirates are getting close to India. I hope we built a big base in Lakshadweep and In should purchase more helicopters to increase surveillance on our islands...

How will they operate on open sea ??/ This one was close but not other. We at-least need OPV.

I dont think they can operate in high seas. A collective effort on the part of the locals in lakshdweep and the countries in INDIAN ocean will surely prevent it.

Good Job!At least due to the pirates there is a increase in the patrolling and it will help in keeping a check on the people who wants to infiltrate inside our country through sea.It will also help us to have an upper hand I.O.R .
