KARACHI: The Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) successfully carried out liver transplants of two patients in Karachi on Thursday.
The patients who were suffering from liver disease are now out of intensive care unit and making good progress, sources told The Express Tribune. When contacted, the spokesperson for SIUT said it was not the first time the institute had conducted such a surgery.
“We have been conducting such surgeries for quite some time,” the spokesperson said without revealing the identity of the patients. “The first such operation was carried out 15 years ago when transplantation of a six-year-old girl was carried out.”
Wife donates part of liver to save husband’s life
The SIUT spokesperson, however, informed The Express Tribune that the patients were aged 46 and 55 and received livers from their families. “So far we have carried out 20 such operations,” the spokesperson added.
Last year, a patient underwent a successful liver transplant surgery at Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Khairpur. The procedure occurred after the health facility got approval from the Human Organ Transplantation Authority (HOTA).
