Singapore & China reaffirm defence ties

Singapore and China have reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral defence ties.

This came during the visit of Member of the Politburo and Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China, General Guo Boxiong.

General Guo met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean on Thusday morning.

Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said during the meeting, Mr Teo and General Guo exchanged views on regional security developments.

After his meeting with Mr Teo, he called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana.

MINDEF said General Guo's visit to Singapore underscores the long-standing bilateral relations between Singapore and China, and the progress made in defence ties, following the signing of the bilateral Agreement on Defence Exchanges and Security Cooperation in January 2008.

The armed forces of both countries interact regularly through the exchange of visits, courses, seminars and port calls.

They conducted their inaugural joint training exercise in Guilin, China, in June 2009.

"General Guo's visit also builds on the good exchange of high-level defence visits from both sides," MINDEF said.

Mr Teo was in China from 19 to 23 April 2010 for an official visit, where he met key Chinese political and military leaders.
