KARACHI:
Sindh has awarded a licence to the Sindh Lakhra Coal Mining Company for conducting a feasibility study on coal mines spread over 20,000 acres in Thatta.
Presiding over the 30th Sindh Coal Authority (SCA) Board meeting, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that significant coal reserves are available at small coal fields in Sonda, Jhimpir, Lakhra, Indus East and Badin.
However, major mining activity is under way only at Lakhra while limited activity was in progress at Jhimpir’s coal mine, he added.
Shah maintained that it was not the SCA’s job to construct roads. Therefore, using his authority as being the chairperson, the chief minister approved the transfer of all the authority’s ongoing road sector schemes to the works and services department, abolishing the four positions of SCA engineers, including that of the SCA chief engineer.
On a recommendation of the SCA, the board approved creation of positions such as assistant director finance BS-17 and mining deputy director BS-18, and also upgraded the positions of some authority officials.
