New development projects: Govt clears Lahore-Sialkot motorway link worth Rs52.7b

ISLAMABAD: The government on Thursday cleared one and a half dozen new development projects costing Rs104 billion including construction of a motorway for a fast track link between Lahore and the country’s export hub of surgical and sports goods.

The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) – a body mandated to approve up to Rs3 billion projects and to recommend the higher cost mega projects for the final approval of Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec) – sanctioned these projects.

It cleared the 91-kilometer long Lahore-Sialkot motorway for the final approval of the Ecnec but the Rs52.7 billion cost is subject to changes. The CDWP Chairman and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal had objections over the interchanges on the motorway, directing to construct the interchanges on main points.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will perform groundbreaking of Lahore-Sialkot Motorway on Monday.

The 89-kilometer long motorway will be dispatched in two years at a price of over 43 billion rupees.

The Motorway will begin from the Lahore Bypass Interchange and end at approximately fifteen kilometers in the west of Sialkot, and it will be linked with M-2 near Kala Shah Kaku.

The international standard project will be implemented under public-private partnership.

The National Highway Authority will construct the Motorway with the cooperation of the Frontier Works Organization.

The motorway besides linking Sialkot and many other areas to lahore, will also provide an alternative route for lahore to access M2 motorway. In the future this motorway can be expanded into Azad Kashmir and could provide an alternative route to Islamabad and northern areas.

Sialkot Int’l Airport: A catalyst for boosting exports

SIALKOT - The trendy Sialkot exporters’ dream of having an International Airport became true, when they established the grand project of Sialkot International Airport in 2007 (ten years ago) on self help besides setting up a unique example of self help, advising others to replicate it.

There was no doubt to say that Sialkot International Airport has become a saga of success, commitment, honour and dedication of Sialkot exporters as well. Now, the Sialkot International Airport has successfully been moving ahead towards the goals of excellence for the last one decade by honouring the commitments of providing the international standard aviation and cargo facilities to the Sialkot exporters and even the general public as well.

Sialkot International Airport has also jazzed up the pace of exports from Sialkot, besides, opening the new vistas of socio –economic human development in Pakistan’s first ever “Golden Export Triangle” comprising the Sialkot, Gujrat and Gujranwala districts.

Now, the Sialkot exporters are pining hope that the project of Sialkot airport would also be helpful in doubling the annual Sialkot exports from exiting $2 billion. The opulent Sialkot business community had established Sialkot International Airport in 2007 (ten years ago) by spending Rs4 billion on self help basis. This airport covers selected site measuring 1034 acres is located at 16 KMs to the West of Sialkot. Sialkot International Airport was built by Sialkot exporters on Build Operate and Own (BOO) basis. It was at a 40 minutes drive from Gujrat and Gujranwala cities as well.

Sialkot export zone should be made SEZ

SIALKOT: Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) President Majid Raza Bhutta suggested that the Sialkot Export Processing Zone (SEPZ) should be given the status of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Talking to APP on Tuesday, he said that the conversion would enable the business community of the region to set up their individual industrial units in the new zone.

Major export-oriented cities like Sialkot can be strong contenders for setting up SEZ; as 99% of the city’s manufactured products are exported to international markets, said Bhutta. He said that Chinese investors should be encouraged to bring their investment, and technology in Sialkot.

The business community of Sialkot has proved once again (after making the first private airport of Pakistan and providing full financing for that rather then asking from the govt) in launching their airline.

Expected to Start Flight Operations by June 2018 with Three Airbus A320 family Aircraft.

Sialkot leather industry and now even surgical industry also facing hard time may be Govt should also guide the industries so that may not become sick or closed. The airport and sial projects are good but shall have no value if industry is shattered. The evidence is Pak exports overall decreased by 20% in FY2017
