Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina may come this December
CAVELOSIM, GOA: Indian and Bangladeshi officials are working on a plan that could see Prime Minister SheikhHasina visit New Delhi this December.
Bangladesh foreign secretary Shahidul Haque told reporters that Hasina may visit India on a bilateral tour in December.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had heaped praises on Hasina’s counter-terror initiatives at a meeting between the two leaders during the BRICS-BIMSTEC meet on Sunday. The move is seen bolstering efforts by the Modi government to build a strong front against terror activities in the region.
“The two sides are working on this visit,” Haque said, even as the much anticipated Teesta water sharing deal between the two nations is yet to see progress.
If the plan materialises, it will be Hasina’s maiden standalone state visit to India after Modi came to power. Hasina has made two visits of less than 24 hours to India earlier — demise of Pranab Mukherjee’s wife in 2015 and BIMSTEC meet.
Bangladesh has shown support for India after the terror attack in Uri (Kashmir) andsurgical strikes. It pulled out of the SAARC Summit scheduled for Islamabad along with India, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
Dhaka has also emerged as a strong partner for India in South Asia, pushing for connectivity network and development projects. Hasina’s name was earlier considered as the chief guest for the 2017 Republic Day celebrations.
Haque also said that Bangladesh remained very hopeful about clinching the Teesta water sharing deal with India.
According to Haque, Hasina explained her multi-pronged approach to counter terror that includes law enforcement besides social awareness programmes through religious scholars, schools and families.
Earlier, speaking at the BRICS-BIMSTEC leaders’ outreach meet, Hasina emphasised on developing quality and resilient infrastructure.
She called for “special” attention from the two BRICS banks to the opportunities in the low-income countries.
But Hasina reminded that all efforts for sustainable development “depend on peace, security and stability”. She said Bangladesh maintains “zero tolerance” to any act of terrorism or violent extremism as a “responsible member of the global community”.
