Shot in the arm for Modi government as OIC paper says no to Kashmir

The Tashkent Declaration of Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers’ meet (Oct 18-19) has no mention of the Kashmir issue even as it touches upon situations in North Africa, West Asia and Afghanistan, a development that could be a shot in the arm for the Modi government even as it tries to build a global narrative on Pakistan sponsored terror.

This OIC Declaration is significant compared to the last four where Jammu & Kashmir had found mention, and therefore signals a shift in stance.

The Declaration of the recently concluded meet, in fact, encourages narratives by the body to counter radicals and extremists globally. In what’s being viewed as a significant move, the declaration of the two-day meet has no reference on Kashmir even as Pakistan highlighted the “situation in J&K” on the occasion. The declaration, however, refers to the rights of Palestinians as well as the situation in Afghanistan.

“We reiterate our full support for Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Shareef, the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination and return to their ancestral places of residence,” reads the declaration.

With reference to violence in North Africa and West Asia, the OIC further noted, “We underline the need for earliest stabilisation of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa and other parts of the continent by way of urgent political resolution of crises.” Simultaneously, the OIC suggested an Afghan-led process for national reconciliation in the landlocked country.

The OIC came down heavily on terrorism. “We reiterate that the struggle against terrorism and violent extremism in all forms and their manifestations…We are convinced that these dangerous phenomena can be defeated and eliminated only through a joint action, elaborating the measures of influence both to the symptoms and the roots of these problems. We appreciate the launch of an OIC Messaging Centre to counter the sham narratives of radical and extremist groups. We are continuing to advocate for further close cooperation in the fight against terrorism, spread of extremist ideology, especially among youth.”

It may be recalled that since July, India has reached out to key OIC states individually through visits by Vice-President, senior MEA officials and India’s diplomatic missions in the respective countries.

Certain OIC member states have even supported India’s stand on Kashmir and Pakistan on an individual basis. ET had reported that Indonesia, home to world’s largest Muslim population, has reservations on the strongly-worded condemnation against India on the Kashmir issue.

It makes no difference even they did support pakistan on kashmir

I am not jumping...yes I was a bit surprised because OIC not mentioning Kashmir may be the first time I know off.

it was one of the few times they have not mentioned Kashmir
there might be consequences for pakistan not supporting the Saudis on Yemen

Pakistan had sent 'special' envoys to countries talking about the alleged "human rights violations committed by Indian forces in J&K".
India has, at a high level, briefed its interlocutors in several countries, including in the member states of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), about Pakistan’s role in aiding and abetting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Replying to a written question on whether the Pakistan government has sent 22 special envoys to world capitals to talk about the Kashmir issue, Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar said according to Pakistan media sources, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif designated 22 ‘special envoys’ to apprise the world about the alleged “human rights abuses committed by Indian forces in Jammu & Kashmir”.

These special envoys visited Belgium, China, France, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US and the UN (New York and Geneva), he said.

“The government at a high level briefed our interlocutors in the concerned countries, including in the member states of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), about Pakistan’s role in aiding and abetting terrorism in J&K and stressed that Pakistan’s policy of glorying anti-India terrorists and supporting cross-border terrorism had negatively affected peace and stability in the entire region.

“Efforts of these envoys (of Pakistan) do not seem to have gained much traction,” Akbar asserted.

Replying to a separate question, he said India has taken up with the Russian government its decision to conduct joint military drills with Pakistan as some reports indicated the joint exercises were to be held in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.

In response, the Russian side clarified that the exercises would not be held in Azad Kashmir, the minister added.

OIC must stop selling oil to India as a measure to pressurize India and show solidarity with oppressed Kashmiris and Pakistan.

Or they can chose to support India by merely passing one or two statement once a year or decade.

I must say - Thank You OIC for not doing anything against Indian interests.

Really OIC statement is a shot in the arm.
Not mentioning of kashmir is already a win for India as OIC has always stood with pakistan on kashmir but now it has mentioned nothing.

oh I am sorry, when it mentioned Kashmir it was not a big deal because OIC has no power, no value....now suddenly views changed OIC became a super power who is with India.

OIC and even the rest of the world has no saying ever in Kashmir issue. There are and ever will be only 2 parties involved in dialogue for Kashmir - India and Pakistan. Ab chahe OIC supports India's stance or Pak's.
