Shoaib slapped Woolmer in India: Liaison officer
NEW DELHI: Controversy just refuses to spare enigmatic speedster Shoaib Akhtar and the latest startling revelation claims that the pacer slapped coach Bob Woolmer following dispute over playing music in the team bus in Jaipur, said a report on a cricket website Wednesday.
NDTV quoted Col Anil Kaul, who was in charge of the Pakistani team during their stay for the Champions Trophy, as saying that Woolmer was irritated with Shoaibââ¬â¢s behaviour and soon an argument started between the duo over playing music in the team bus. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Boys were listening to Hindi songs when Bob Woolmer removed the iPod and put on an English song. Shoaib got up and again changed the music, put on a Hindi song,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ said Colonel Kaul. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Woolmer kept quiet and then started making fun of the song. This was too much for Shoaib. He suddenly got up and gave Woolmer a tight slap. Everyone was stunned and quickly intervened,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ he added.
And hours after the incident, Pakistan team management announced that Shoaib and Mohammed Asif were being sent back home after failing a dope test. According to the channel, the same night Shoaib was involved in another brawl during the champions Trophy after the team dinner. The pacer reportedly started a brawl at a disco after forcibly trying to dance with a girl. And it was not the end of the story, said Col Kaul. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Shoaib went to the floor where the Indian team was staying and started banging on the doors. He accidentally banged on the door of Indian coach Greg Chappell and his wife came out, dressed in her night clothes. ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢Shoaib made some comments about her. The next morning, I was having breakfast with the Pakistani team manager when Woolmer stormed in. He said even Chappell has complained about Shoaib and strict action must be taken,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ he revealed.
Cricinfo adds: The allegations have been vehemently denied by both Shoaib and Woolmer. Shoaib responded to the same channel: ââ¬ÅWhy would I slap anyone? I have never argued with the coach and neither do I have any thing with Woolmer on which I would argue. There was probably an argument, a difference of opinions but never anything as serious as raising my hand on someone. There is nothing to this, these are all concocted stories. I have a very good relationship with Bob.ââ¬Â
Woolmer confirmed this version and denied that Shoaib was sent back for any reason other than the doping charges. Speaking to Cricinfo, Woolmer said, ââ¬ÅThe story just isnââ¬â¢t true. I donââ¬â¢t have an iPod and anyway it was a cellphone with music on it. I didnââ¬â¢t have any way of changing the song. We joked about the music but at no stage did Shoaib slap me. We were just having a laugh. He was sent back because of the doping issue and nothing else.ââ¬Â
The PCB are unlikely to let the matter rest here either as both Woolmer and Salim Altaf, director operations PCB, say they will contact the ICC about Kaulââ¬â¢s allegations. Altaf told Cricinfo, ââ¬ÅHe is employed by the ICC to look after the team. He cannot go around afterwards giving fabricated stories to news channels. Action will be taken and we will take it up with the ICC.ââ¬Â
If action is taken, it is likely that Kaulââ¬â¢s comments about an incident in a discotheque as well as the team hotel, both involving Shoaib, will also be looked at.
