Ship snaps in two

He was riding directly into the waves. He should have been taking the swell from the bows.
Also the hull would be weak due to heavy rusting.

The sea state isn't that high, around 3, but the wave height is a bit more.

why did this happen? an old ship or bad welding or something?

A couple of things that worked against it. Ship was very old (about 45 years). Not designed for sea. Structure was long and narrow (suited for rivers) and probably the load was not properly distributed (my assumption) since the swells were not too extreme and it snapped while not moving.
