Abe promoted the idea that he will reclaim the Kuril islands when he took office in 2012, but everyone knew it was unrealistic.

What can Japan offer Russia for that deal? Russia has literally nothing to gain from giving those islands to Japan for free, and those are strategic islands that gives Russia unrestricted access to the Pacific Ocean, have complete economic control over Sea of Okhotsk, and of course, some military leverage over Japan.

Nothing short of a war will reclaim those islands, and you don't want to start a war with a nuclear superpower than can flatten the earth 20 times over.

Japan fears the bear, bullies the panda

In both its sovereignty disputes with Russia and S Korea, USA doesnt appear to back up Japan.
In respect of Diaoyu Islands, US is highly vocal in the support of Japan
That is the key difference of Japans stance taken between the conflicts with China and others

On the Diaoyu Islands conflict, this is what a US history professor said, on top of many valid documents showing Diaoyu Islands do not belong to Japan:

" The (Edited: Diaoyu) Islands, for example, have appeared on both Japanese and Chinese maps, and recently became a focal point of territorial conflict between China and Japan. According to Dudden, Japan, despite its claims on the islands, has a weak historical case for owning them.

Japanese now realize the islands are so little when comparing with Sakhalin.

Not quite, there is another option since Putin had proposed to Japan to do a 50 - 50 split where Japan gets the 2 islands that are closer to them and Russia retains the other 2, but that would require Japan to consider the issue fully settled which is something that they don't want to do, they want all 4 islands or nothing and that means they will get nothing.

See, Japan is never a significant power, it is only in their dreams that they are powerful nation.

In that case, what is china waiting for in order to take over the Senkaku islands?
