I did NCC army training during my college days in 90s, it was not compulsory but you would get 20 marks added to your final result of FSc or FA if you did it. For FSc students like us aspiring to join medical or engineering institutes, NCC was a must to get those "crucial" 20 marks. It wasn't a free deal, you had to get the military uniform with your own money and had to do NCC army training for 3 or 4 weeks in both first and second years of your FSc. I was really difficult to manage because I also used to visit two tution centers every day after the training. I still remember those push ups, parades, jokes , humiliations and funny stories from those NCC days. We were even given the chance to learn to operate a military rifle in the army cannt area for one day, I think everyone was given to fire 7 or 8 bullets on a target in the mudd hill. The parades used to be funny, our army instructor subedar used to say "dain murr" and we used to turn left just to tease him. "Asan bash", "bain murr" , oh my god those were funny days .
