Shaken presidency blames media for Zardaris outburst
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Zardaris blistering attack on President Pervez Musharraf has shaken the Presidency with one of its confidants acknowledging that those who wanted the two to fight have succeeded.
You should distribute sweets as you have been successful, the confidant said irritably when asked about any rift caused by Zardaris remarks that Musharraf is a relic of the past, standing between the people of Pakistan and democracy, that there is tremendous pressure on the new government to ensure his ouster from the office and that the public is telling the PPP that we dont want bread, we dont want electricity, but we want him out.
When I say you have succeeded, I mean a section of the media that has been relentlessly struggling to create confrontation between the president and Zardari, the confidant said. He, however, refuted as mere speculation that the Presidency has taken notice of Zardaris interview to the Indian wire agency in which he lambasted Musharraf.
Rehman Malik, now adviser to the prime minister on interior, and Tariq Aziz, Secretary National Security Council, have been interacting on behalf of Zardari and Musharraf respectively to have a smooth working relationship between their bosses.
However, after Musharraf-Zardari tension touched its zenith for the first time after the Feb 18 elections, the two had no contact. They were instrumental in the conclusion of a deal between the PPP and the Presidency including the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO). After the general elections, they have been closely working to remove irritants.
I am in Lahore and will be back late night, Rehman Malik told The News. I had no contact with Tariq Aziz (after Zardaris interview), he said. The presidential confidant replied in negative when asked whether any effort has been made to repair the wide rupture caused in the Musharraf-Zardari relationship.
