Shabbir Sharif was a Pakistani soldier who received both Nishan e Haider and Sitara e Jurat (Pakistani war medals) for his bravery.
During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, Shabbir (a company commander) was ordered to capture the high ground in the Sulemanki Sector.
On the 3rd of December 1971, he cleared the Jhangar post by passing through a minefield and swimming across a water obstacle whilst under intense enemy fire, leading his men to victory. During the day, his troops repelled over 15 Indian attempts to recapture the high ground. He and his men destroyed four enemy tanks and held two Indian battalions at bay, killing 43 soldiers.
On the 5th of December 1971, he jumped out of his trench on the call of an Indian Company Commander who dared him to hand-to-hand combat, which he won. The act demoralized the Indian troops, which allowed his troops to further capitalise on their gains.
On the 6th of December 1971, the Indian army launched a counter-offensive aimed at a bridge him and his men were defending. After casualties amongst the crew, he took over as a gunner on an anti-tank gun and started firing on the enemy tanks. While this fight was on, one of the enemy tanks fired at him, thus killing him. His last words were quoted as: “Don’t lose the bridge.”
