Wing Commander Sanjeet Singh Kaila, survivor of a near fatal MiG-21 crash, has has become the first pilot to move to court demanding scrapping of the MiG-21 fighter jets from the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Kalia has filed a petition at the Delhi High Court saying that flying a MiG-21 violated his right to work in a safe environment.

Kaila was injured in a MiG-21 crash in January 2005 while he was on a routine sortie from the Nal Air Base in Rajasthan. The crash left him with severe neck and spinal injuries rendering him unfit to fly. He said the crash was caused by poor workmanship at a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited facility.

Even though his MiG-21 was on fire but Kaila did not eject as the plane would have fallen on a populated village. He managed to steer his jet to an open field and then only managed to eject.

I am also in support to scrap all of the MiG-21s as they are killing innocent pilots of IAF. Rather its better to deploy Su-30s or buy some old Mirages or Jaguars from EU.

Very good move. This flying coffin should be scrapped. It would have been scrapped if the LCA program was not delayed!

But bigot IAF is happy with this & don't want LCA

IAF has reasons to stick to it and not go for LCA. One of them, as have been mentioned, quick reaction time. Lets not get into Mig vs LCA. If at all, it is ministry's fault for not increasing procurement speed.

Arey jab viman hawa mein rahega hi nahi to kya quick reaction karoge?

MiG-21 was lethal as a new fighter jet in 60s and those times.

Today they are a relic and must be respectfully decommissioned.

How many more pilots have to die for this stupid excuse?

Tejas was built to replace the MiG-21 for the same 'quick reaction' interdiction roles.

What makes you think it will not be capable enough?

IAF is just being like a teen girl changing its demands every now and then so that the project keeps getting delayed.

Thanks to their tantrums, Indian defense industry has become a joke around the world.

Only Dhruv is the saving grace.

IF ANYBODY THINKS THAT A RELIC low cost high in maintenance russiam MIG21 now 50 years old in airframe annd FLIGHT CONTROLS is going to take on JF17 F16 & J10 in a war THEY ARE LIVING IN DELUSION ...

A COUNTRY calling it self a rising regional power who SPENDS $40 BILLION a year on its military SHOULD NOT HAVE A SINGLE MIG21 in frontline LET ALONE 200

ITS A JOKE we are behaving like a banana REBUBLIC

I'm looking foreword to the drama that is expected to unfold in the court.

My source is some interview of a officer, posted here in PDF. Tejas was supposed to take the role of interdiction. But the engine, as we all know, proved to be insufficient. I don't know the status of new engine, but even that was ordered quite late. What has IAF to do with this impractical and sluggish approach of HAL/ADA?

Problem is if we scrap it at once, our squadron strength will collapse.
I propose we reduce flying hrs on these things.
