ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Sports has sought explanation from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt over his reported statement that some senators had blackmailed him.
Senator Haroon Khan quoted Mr Butt as saying that the senators had come to him demanding the payment of outstanding dues of Rs110 million to contractors and threatened him that if the payment was not made they (Senators) would malign the board about its role in match fixing.
Senators Haroon and Tariq Azeem were in a sub-committee which investigated a dispute between contractors and the board relating to construction of Qadhafi Stadium and Rawalpindi Stadium.
The dispute of about Rs156 million is between the management of the board and its contractor Metco Pvt Ltd and consultants Nespak Pvt Ltd.
The committee which met here at the Senate secretariat said: A privilege motion should be moved by the respected senators while we want an explanation from PCB chairman Ijaz Butt over his remarks. His comments have hurt the credibility of honourable members of the Upper House, besides undermining the respect of the committee.
The committee has been critical of Mr Butt and it adopted a unanimous resolution a few months ago demanding removal of the boards management. But the resolution has not been implemented.
Senator Haroon said: The allegation was primarily focused on me and secondly on Senator Tariq Azeem. You must call him here and seek an explanation while we are moving a privilege motion against Mr Butt.
But Sports Minister Aijaz Hussain Jhakrani informed the committee he had personally spoken to the PCB chairman and he categorically denied having made such remarks. Instead he always respects Mr Haroon.
But Senator Haroon had press clippings and a CD of Mr Butts statement.
