Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Sunday argued that the United States should ban Chinese students from learning about science while they are in the United States.

During an interview on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures program, Cotton asserted that China is trying to “actively trying steal” a coronavirus vaccine from the U.S.

“The Chinese Communist Party has been stealing America’s intellectual property for decades and they’re not going to magically stop in the middle of a pandemic,” Cotton opined. “In the middle of a pandemic, what’s the most valuable intellectual property in the world? It’s the research that our great laboratories and life science companies are doing on prophylactic drugs, therapeutic drugs and ultimately a vaccine.”

“So, I have little doubt that the Chinese intelligence services are actively trying to steal America’s intellectual property as it relates to the virus they unleashed on the world,” he continued. “Because of course they want to be the country that claims credit for finding those drugs of finding a vaccine and then use it as leverage against the rest of the world.”

Cotton went on to attack Chinese students who are studying abroad in the U.S.

“It’s a scandal to me that we have trained so many of so many of the Chinese Communist Party’s brightest minds to go back to China, to compete for our jobs, to take our business and ultimately to steal our property,” the senator said.

“I think we need to take a very hard look at the visas we give Chinese nationals to come to the U.S. to study,” he added. “Especially at the post-graduate level in advanced scientific and technological fields.”

According to Cotton, Chinese students should be studying “Shakespeare and the Federalist Papers.”

“That’s what they need to learn from America,” he insisted. “They don’t need to learn quantum computing and artifical intelligence from America.”

As usual some of these proposals are poorly thought out ... who would make up the funding shortfall caused by banning Chinese students at US institutions? And by doing this on a discriminatory basis (i.e. targeting Chinese nationals), wouldn't such actions damage the reputation of American colleges? The Chinese students would just go elsewhere, such as Britain and Europe. Senator Cotton should consider these ramifications before laying out these crazy policy proposals ...

In the 1980s, US, UK, and other western countries did the same thing to the Libyan students who were in the field of Chemical Engineering, physics, and nuclear science fields.

I knew this was coming. It is radical now but will be mainstream by next year after one more manufactured crisis with China.

US doesn't know that it is not the only country which has colleges, actually the best engineering and computer science schools in the world are in China.

Tsinghua Named World’s Best Engineering, Computer Science School
Oct 25, 2017
Beijing university overtakes MIT in two US News & World Report subject rankings.

One of China’s elite educational institutions, Tsinghua University in Beijing, is the world’s top school for both engineering and computer science, authoritative ranking survey U.S. News & World Report announced Tuesday.

While Tsinghua has previously held U.S. News’ top spot for engineering, this marks the first time the school has overtaken the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to be named the world’s best in computer science. Tsinghua was also ranked sixth in materials science and 10th in chemistry.

Other Chinese universities to be ranked highly for engineering include the Harbin Institute of Technology at No. 6 and Zhejiang University at No. 7. Zhejiang University also made the global top 10 in computer science, behind ninth-ranked Hangzhou University of Science and Technology.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated 1,250 universities in 74 countries for its 2018 rankings. The top four overall spots went to U.S. institutions Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and the University of California–Berkeley, in that order, with the U.K.’s Oxford University rounding out the top five.

Tsinghua, meanwhile, ranked fourth in Asia behind two Singaporean universities and the University of Tokyo, and 64th overall, just ahead of Beijing rival Peking University.

“The schools that rank the highest in the Best Global Universities rankings are those that emphasize academic research, including by partnering with international scholars to produce highly cited articles,” said Robert Morse, chief data strategist for U.S. News, in the company’s press release.

For its 2018 global rankings, U.S. News said it placed greater emphasis on international collaboration, rewarding schools that partnered with their foreign peers to write and publish papers. Other variables considered for the company’s rankings methodology include research reputation, number of publications, and citation frequency.

Tsinghua University did not immediately respond to Sixth Tone’s interview request on Wednesday.

China has some world class universities, mainly Tsinghua, Peking University, Tongji, Jiaotong, but American universities still dominate global rankings and are by far more prestigious, not to mention collectively having far more of a research base and institutional strength.

They rank high mainly due to prestige, nothing more, besides , China's R&D is overtaking US, US is too late to try to stop China's rise in science and technology.

China has risen fast, but the US is still ahead, and far ahead in many areas. Also, the US can draw on talent all over the world while China can only draw on domestic talent.

What you claim about US was always there if not more in the past, not a new thing, but it didn't stop China fast closing the gap, so thoes factors don't seem to matter.

Fuuuuug... My country has one full on bat sht crazy!! God please save us all.

We already have many vaccine types done human trials before in March. Some doctors trying on themselves. Vaccine development can take many years for new viruses and many countries now have trials for experimental vaccines. So this politician doesn't know the first thing about science and how much science China is capable of mastering already. To develop vaccine is a lot of luck involved also so big numbers and trials helps. Anyway trials can take two days or two years before good results get developed into final public vaccines.

Big important thing to realize is this senator and many politicians are told to say and do certain things. Right now there is organized action with coronavirus to cause disruption and create more anger and hate. Trump wants everyone to forget how stupid his entire party is now and how poorly they manage things. It's to distract people and make them emotional about things and think in all different directions in society. Have so many people fighting each other in diverse society in America and forget the leaders and the plans of leaders and wealthy ones. Maybe it is true Trump is Russian agent to destroy USA from inside.

This is another point, when I realize how destructive humans can be.
